OT Wise Words for DirtyDawg

I'm feeling inspired by DirtyDawg's curiosity and I think we should have a handy reference guide for the young man as he embarks on his freshman year.
I'm trying to imagine what I would say to my 18-year-old self were I given the opportunity. Nothing too serious, mind you - just those things you wished you knew when you were 18:
School:
If you have half a brain, freshman year is bullshite. There is no reason to worry about core classes. Get some ideas, explore your interests. Sweating classes freshman year is silly. Organize your week, classes and studying, as though it was a M-F, 9-5. Work for the weekend. frick what anyone else says.
Extracurricular:
Frats are unnecessary unless you're socially retarded. If you are, by all means PLEDGE IMMEDIATELY. If, however, you are coming from a working class background, save your parents some dough and save yourself the headache, steer clear of frats.
There are MANY different clubs and organizations to join for socialization. Find something aligned with your interests and do that.
Girls:
Don't be a dick. That's someone's daughter you're talking to. Not saying you can't frick her, but don't ever treat her like a thing (this is something I realized in HS). Reputation is a two-way street. There are plenty of women who are into exploring their sexuality and who will help you become better at that. Look on them as equals, not as conquests. You can end up having some great friends who will help you meet other women. Steer clear of the drunken kooze. It's nothing but a weak man's game.
Life:
Find your passion. This is the one time in your life you get carte blanche to really figure out life. Money and status are fickle pursuits - a truly great life is built on the relationships you create. Having truly great friends - men and women who care about you - is the greatest endeavor in this life. Build a family of good people around you. That is the greatest gift in this life. Everything else is just window dressing.
Lastly:
Don't compromise your heart. Don't settle. Not ever.

I would offer slightly differing advice..get as many core classes out of the way as is possible..you can still explore some subjects that might give you a direction towards which degree you want...1st semester freshman year is usually one of the toughest on the student from a time management and workload standpoint...DONT GET BEHIND IN YOUR CLASSES...school is first..play is second, but having said that..WORK HARD! PLAY HARD!..
I agree totally on the frat comments and handling girls as well, EXCEPT start recognizing the good ones as fast as possible..
and believe me..a few party gals along the way will make your life so worth living!

Yeah, the core classes part comes across all wrong. I mean don't worry as in, don't let them stress you out. They are easy if you stay on top of them (hence my, M-F, 9-5 comment).

I'm going to highly disagree with the M-F, 9-5 part. 100% disagree.
First of all, YES it is important to not fall behind and don't frick up. Study. Do homework. Turn in papers on time. Etc etc...do your frickin work.
BUT, these next four years are going to be THE LAST YEARS OF YOUR LIFE where you don't have "real" responsibilities. AFter you graduate you're going to work 9-5 until you retire in 40 years. You wanna get absolutely shithoused on a Tuesday at noon? Go for it! Wanna go see a concert at the theater Thursday night but are worried about being hungover for your Friday class? Skip the class! One time won't kill ya. Go play golf on that first beatiful weather day of the spring. Go take a cooler up to cali n titos and get wrecked at 2 in the afternoon. Head to the pool and hit on girls, play some volleyball, get high and marathon some movies, go toss in the quad, etc etc.....do it. THOSE are the memories that you will cherish forever and make you think back fondly as an alum of UGA. Not sitting in your room counting down the hours until you're allowed to have fun that day.

The people who get good jobs out of school are the people who A)major in something that is relevant or soon-to-be relevant and B) push to be better than "gettin by" in their classes. Most feshmen don't have the sense to moderate their time - they are more likely to go full-on lush and flunk out or nearly flunk out.
I agree with the occasional 2 pm drunk on a Tuesday, but just make sure your shite is done before you do it.

I'll probably do the 2 PM drunk on Wednesday this year. I had one of the first orientations so my schedule is pretty perfect. I decided to get my PE out of the way as well as my First Year Odyssey Seminar. I put both on Tuesdays and Thursday, and the Odyssey only meets one day a week
