If Alabama were a country, it would have the world’s highest incarceration rate

According to the Prison Policy Initiative, a criminal justice think tank, 861 out of every 100,000 Alabamians are in jail. The U.S. as a whole incarcerates 716 people for every 100,000 residents, far ahead of second-place country, Cuba, which incarcerates 510 out of every 100,000 residents.
Alabama is actually one of 13 states in the U.S. that has an incarceration rate higher than any country. But it’s not only the state’s total prison population that has proved costly and problematic, it’s the fact that Alabama also has the most serious prison overcrowding problem in the U.S. It’s so bad that the state could be running the risk of federal courts stepping in and ordering the haphazard release of thousands of prisoners.
California serves as an example of what can happen when the federal government is forced to intervene.
In the 2011 Supreme Court case Brown v. Plata, the Court required the State of California to remove 46,000 criminals from its prisons by forcing The Golden State to cut its prison population to 137.5 percent of “design capacity.”
The Public Policy Institute of California found that property crime increased by 7.6 percent the year after the mass releases. Car thefts rose almost 15 percent. In short, 24,000 more people had their car stolen in California in 2012 as a result of the state not being able to get its prison overcrowding problem under control.
Alabama’s prisons are at roughly 190 percent capacity, 50 percent higher than the level the Court mandated for California. The Yellowhammer State currently houses over 25,000 inmates in facilities designed to hold approximately 13,000.

Thats interesting but doesnt draw that many conclusions. I am left with a lot more questions.
1. What number of these people committed violent crimes.
2. What number are foreign born, or illegal aliens?
3. How many of these are petty drug crimes?
4. What is the racial make up of the population vs the prison population?
5. Does the statistic include county jails (under sheriff control) or just state prisons?

Surprisingly, I'm not bothered by this. If I had to pick one state where I'd rather less of its inhabitants are walking around, AL wins.
Good job to your penal system for realizing the problem and addressing it.

Well at least they are doing something right.
I have no idea on how to look up violent offenders. I do know that in most counties you don't want to end up in the CO Jail, say hello to stale bread cold grits and maybe a shower if you're lucky.

It makes sense. Our prison systems are privatized, so they are making money off people going to jail. Our prisons are overfilled, and how many times do you hear about people getting off after a couple of yrs, when they should be in jail for 20+yrs.
Recently, a woman got shot by her bf, she worked for the D.A.'s office and he was a probation officer. He got convicted but only spent a yr or two in jail. She was my good friends sister, and it completely fricked their family up (she was 29), yet that piece of shite is out now and should be in prison for life. But you can thank our judicial system for that. But hey, lets keep this teenager in prison for life b/c of some pot brownies.

Yeah because everyone who goes to prison is BAD. Screw those non violent criminals! They deserve disease and filth for 30 years.

If you end up in prison for non violent shite....You have put in a lot of fricking work aggravating the hell out of cops with your bullshite. Drugs, stealing, etc....enough so that they put your arse in prison for it.

I've gotten away with a lot for just being cordial with police officers.
Whenever I see someone arrested for something minor, I immediately assume they did some dumb shite to end up there.

Kinda like the military industrial complex keeps driving us to war. The law enforcement prison complex keeps driving us to incarceration. Too much money invested and too many jobs on the line to change it now.....
