Outside of the DEs that you had last year, I don't know or remember much about it.

Tough to say since we have a new DC. He plays a much more aggressive/attacking style of defense than Chris Ash's read and react style that we played last season. They looked much improved in the spring game but obviously that was against the second string D.

We return 7 starters so we have experience for the most part but obviously the jury is out on talent since we were so terrible last year.

Trey Flowers and Darius Philon are going to be beasts on the DL but everyone else is a question mark.

New DC, which is good coming from players.

Players didn't seem to care much for Ash. Randy Shannon from all I gather, maws glad to see him go as well. Ash seemed to tell Shannon who he could and couldn't insert at LB through the year. Those two did not get along, at all.

I think the secondary will be improved. Linebackers should be deeper than most hog fans think and the front four will be solid with good to great defensive ends.

Here's a good breakdown of what we might see from Robb Smith.

Should be better than last year. Bert is slowly improving our defensive talent and depth. Plus Bert hired upgrades at defensive assistants, much like Saban did after his first year in the SEC.

All signs point towards improvement on paper. Can't wait to see it on the field

Conditioning is way better, our secondary looks beefed up physically . Our dl will be great. We won't know how much talent there is at lb or the secondary until the game.

The new DCs style will definitely be an improvement. We'll lose a lot of big plays, but we'll get more turnovers. This will also let our run game wear down defenses if we don't let offenses stay on the field.

Tampa Bay LB coach under Schiano in 2013.

I believe he coached at Rutgers as well.

Alabama had the exact same defensive staff in 2007 and 2008. Which happens to be the same defensive staff we have now. Kirby Smart and Kevin Steele just switched titles after 2007.

This D will probably be our best unit in 6 or 7 years, not elite but much better than we've had.

Rutgers had a really good defense with Smith, with the talent he has to work with now I think we could be around 7th or 8th in the league in total defense this year.

cool. he obviously had learned what type of staff was needed to succeed in the SEC.

however after his first year in the SEC at LSU he changed up a few of the coaches on the defensive side of the ball. Sabans first year at lsu was 2000. These position coaches were in their first year at lsu in 2001

Defensive Coordinator: Gary Gibbs
Defensive Backs: Charlie Harbison
Linebackers: Will Muschamp
Offensive Line: George Yarno

I would describe it as having a Reggie Herring aggressiveness with the willingness to play zone every now and then.

That's probably a good description actually.

DL should be very good. LB is still thin and will probably still be a weakness tbh. The secondary is ineresting. They were BAD last year but everyone is back and our new DB coach always had good ones at TCU. Supposedly they've improved but we've heard that before.

As others have said, our new DC will be aggressive and blitz a lot, so we will make big plays but give up big plays too (which we probably would anyways lol). He was the DC at Rutgers when they beat us in 2012.
