so every 4 years we talk about how there needs to be more interest in soccer and how we underperform.

the obvious answer to WHY we don't have great interest and underperformance is that we are a nation divided between baseball, football, and basketball as our primary sports and our best athletes and attention go there.

i don't know the sport as well as most of y'all, but i do give it my honest attention every 4 years and am getting more into it as my boys are starting to love it.

obviously we'd be better if we weren't divided among the other sports, but would we be the best? do you think if our RBs, QBs, CBs, point guards and short stops were soccer players would we be the top? or just mildly better?

We would be the best in the world if we devoted our top athletes from the time they are kids to it.

Talent is only part of the issue. Having a system that really develops that talent is an issue.

We would rape in soccer if that were our primary national sport.

No question or hubris about it.

Americans don't care about the sport because the best up-and-comers immediately head overseas. Hopefully that will change but in the meantime we have to happy with baby steps.

It may be popular but it's not close to the big 3 (football, baseball, basketball) and won't ever be.

absolutely. my kids love it. i own soccer cleats to practice with. but that still doesn't change the fact that it's not showing up on the field currently. i understand it'll take time, but i've been hearing that US was putting emphasis on it since the women won their championship to no avail

There still isnt very much money in it for an American kid. Say you have a 15 year old who is world class at soccer and basketball, what is going to choose? Live at home and be on tv every night and make 10-20 mil a year, or live in Europe and make most likely less.

We would be the apex team. We wouldnt be like the 92' dream team, but we would win the vast majority of games.

Of course not. We will never see another international team so vastly better than the rest of the world like they were.

Honestly I think a better salary would help a lot of people choose soccer We just don't have the interest or following.

Soccer is such a finesse sport and it would be hard for a naturally gifted athlete to excel it without years of playing the sport. It could happen perhaps at goalkeeper or at the striker position, but not in the midfield our back line.

I think we're really only a few years away from being a dominant team on the world stage. MLS is gaining popularity, football is under the microscope for the concussion issues, and more kids are playing soccer every year. I don't think it will ever supplant the big three, but I think more and more kids are going to choose soccer over the other three as they progress through middle and high school.

Agree for the most part.

Our better athletes will still go with football/basketball first and foremost, IMO.

But we'll still continue steadily improving.

Combine this with the inevitable decline of football due to head trauma over the next couple of decades, and soccer will be king in the US in 30 or so years.

Thankfully, I'll be dead.
