I'm on a lunch break for my 1st jury duty experience. The 1st case was a black guy vs the state, and out of 16 people, they chose 6 to be the jury, and 5 of the 6 was black, and the other guy was an old hippy. It seemed racist as frick, b/c pretty much all the black people were chosen, and even the reserve was a black guy. Not that it matters, but it seemed real funny to me.

The 2nd case, was another black guy fighting a dui and drug charge, but there aren't but like 1 or 2 black people to choose from, so I dont know what they are going to do. haha.

So anybody else have any good jury duty stories?

Only time I got a summons, I got out of it because I was in school at the time.

My dad was on the jury for a murder trial back when I was 5 or 6. I didn't really understand what a jury was and thought my dad was the one that had murdered someone. I cried and cried for a couple of days until my mom explained to me what a jury was.

yep, thats pretty much the way it works. Tried by a jury of your peers.

I had a similar jury experience. black guy robs a hair salon trying to steal hair extensions. Is caught in the act and runs from the cops. Then pleads innocent and wants a jury trial.

had to sit there all day while the lawyers asked the most inane questions. At the end of the day the only ones that got picked were black. However, these folks that got picked were not stupid folks. Professionals mostly. While I guess race wont figure in the decision (good), I think this fool probably got sent away. Black people dont take shite if they can help it any more than anybody else. besides the crime was robbing a black owned business.

I got summoned not long after I turned 18. Sat down there for days with nothing. The 2nd to last day I got selected for a medical malpractice suit that was only going before a jury because it was the mayor's brother in law. Basically he had a double hernia surgery and claimed that they dropped him off the table, injuring his brachial plexus. Ended up lasting a month and was the most ridiculous accusation of a conspiracy that I've seen. A specialist from Duke basically came in and said the paralysis in his arm from it was likely due to a dormant virus that could be triggered by anything.

The courtroom next door was hosting a huge murder trial where a teenage girl was caught in gang related cross fire. The way the courthouse was set up, all jurors for that floor exited from one door. So there were media folks camped out outside of the door waiting for jurors to come out. Very surreal.

Called to district 2 times. Never got called and went home on Wed for one. The other, got picked for the Grand Jury. Served 1 week in Jan, 1 week in Feb and 1 week in March. Indicted probably 700 out of 710 those 3 weeks.

Called once to civil trial. Never called and got sent home by Tuesday.

Called once to federal. Got on a case, after 2 witnesses, the defendant plead out and went home early that week as well.

Have been called once since those and I started my business. Excused now since it'd create a hardship on me.

i had a summons last year for a serial rapist.

he had been convicted of 4 of 6 of the rapes and i was on the panel for #6 but did not make the cut. there were 60 of us in the room and selection went like "juror 3 you are dismissed, juror 6 you are dismissed..." all the way till they had 9 not dismissed and kicked the rest of us out.

interesting experience to say the least. i did have a coworker who made the cut and said it was not a fun experience... but you know... rape.

Got selected for federal jury duty in February.

Only case I got pulled for was unnecessary force in a prison. Judge starts asking all the questions to see who can be eliminated like "do you know either person involved" or "do you know either lawyer involved" etc.

Lasts question he asks is "Have you, a family member or a very close friend ever spent time in prison". About 75% of the potential jurors had to go up to the judge and explain their experience in private

And most of them ended up on the jury. FOrtunately I did not and got to go home

Never been called by some weird fluke. My wife, however, has been called three times and not selected for any.

My Mom sat on a jury for a case in the late 80s where a man had raped a Girl Scout that came to his door. She basically got picked because she had a child of the same age.

She won't talk much about it. I'm pretty sure he had taken pictures and the like and those were shared with the jury. Pretty awful stuff.

I got called for the first time earlier this year. Dude was fleeing the cops in a $70K Mercedes at 3 in the morning. The dash cam had the cop approaching 100 MPH and the driver that was running turned off his headlights put the hammer down. He lost the cops for a few minutes. They ended up finding the guy behind a construction business 5-10 minutes later.

The 2nd dash cam comes on when they discover the car and the dudes side chick is pissing in the parking lot. She was gonna finish until she saw the cops bail out of the cars with their AR-15s drawn. A couple of us just about lost it.

There was a lot of yelling and screaming with guns drawn, then they got the guy in handcuffs. The cops are putting him in the car and they ask him if he wanted them to call his wife to come and pick up the car. He said "Nope, tow it." The car had 97 miles on the odometer. We convicted him on meth possession, paraphernalia, ADHD pills without a prescription, evading police, and reckless driving. He got out of the DUI charge because a blood test has to be administered within 2 hours of the arrest in the State of Kansas.

I went back to watch the sentencing because I hadn't been through the process before and I thought it was interesting. Dude got 1 year probation, suspended license for a year, and entered into a drug rehab program. To get his license back, he has to attend a safe driving course.

Don't know how much it contributed to fixing this guy. But it was interesting to look at the actual process. The judge was pretty good. I'm not sure I could do that job. I would be bored out of my mind listening to the formalities of every case and listening to the lawyers bicker back and forth over semantics. He was on point though.

I made it through the initial rounds in a murder case, close as I've ever come to serving in at least 10 chances. Both lawyers quizzed everybody left if they knew the victim or the accused or any of their family members or if they'd ever heard of either. That went on for an hour or so. Finally they get past all that, and a woman in the jury pool says,
"Excuse me, but is this Billy Bob Jones who lives out on Oakridge Road?"
Attorney: "Yes ma'am, it is. Do you know him?"
Woman: "Well, yes. And I'm sorry I didn't speak up sooner but I wasn't sure if he..."
Attorney: "That's OK ma'am. Thank you for coming in. You can..."
Woman: "...was THAT Billy Bob Jones. Because there's no way..."
Attorney: "That's OK, ma'am. I understand. If you'd just step..."
Woman: "... I could be impartial."
Attorney: "OK, ma'am. You don't need to say anything else."
Woman: "Well, I just couldn't. Because I know that man..."
Attorney: "Please stop talking."
Woman: "... and there's nothing you can tell me he did that would surprise me. That man is no damn good."
Attorney: Sigh. "OK, ma'am. Thank you for your input."
Woman: "Well, I just thought you should know. I'm sure he's guilty."

And then we were all dismissed.

I have served on 9 juries. Both sides must like me.

Favorite case: A meets B at a Church's and gives him $500.00 for drugs.

B says wait here and I will go get pick up and be right back.

3 Hours later, A still waiting and calls the police. He swears out a warrant and gives the the tag number of the car B left in. On the stand he was quite proud he had written down the tag number.

B testifies on his own behalf and says it was a simple misunderstanding He thought A was joking about wanting drugs and he took the money to play a trick on him. Was going to return the money when the police pulled him over in his Cadillac.

Police officer testified B had put the car in the name of his 4 year old son and also charged him with this. A testified he knew if he was ever arrested for drugs his car could be taken and the
law could not take it away from his son, the rightful owner.

Judge got mad and declared a mistrial. I read several months later that B had been shot in a drug deal gone bad.
