Since I live in the Palmetto state I figured I would bring this here instead of the UGA board.
What courses do you play (location Upstate, Low Country, Coast etc.) How ya hitting them, whats in your bag and all that.
I'm normally play the upstate (Pickens, Oconee, Anderson County)and Myrtle Beach courses.
I don't hit them that well often.
RBZ irons SLDR white RBZ 3W and Hybrids SC Red X putter. and Vokey 58deg.

Tips and great locations to try are always welcome

if you ever come to the Midlands in Aiken county you should stop by Aiken Golf Club. Built in 1912, it's short but a lot of fun to play and is in great shape. The greens definitely defend the course's lack of length. Another track just outside of downtown Aiken is Palmetto Golf Club. It was built in 1892 , but unlike Aiken GC, it's private. If you get an invite to play it, don't pass it up.

I think I've played just about every good course in the State at one time or another ... most of them multiple times.

I play Aiken CC and Palmetto all the time, along with Indian Trails, Ponderosa CC (maybe the best deal in the state of SC), Lexington CC, Sweetwater (Barnwell) and Sage Valley (Graniteville).

Sage Valley is one of the best kept secrets in the country IMHO. It rivals Augusta National. If we lived just a little bit closer we'd join. As it is I play it every couple two or three weeks or so with a friend who is a member.

Lexington CC is an excellent course and usually in very good condition.

CC of SC out near Florence is a treasure. I play there at least once a year every year, usually twice, sometimes three times depending upon if there are ever any tournaments out there or not. (Never play that course with George Rogers unless you pack a lot of extra balls. He never takes enough and he's gonna want yours.) CC of SC is one of the finer courses in the state if not the entire Southeast.

Caledonia is Caledonia. It's legendary. Great course. Not as great as Sage Valley though.

Both of the Cheraw courses, across the road from one another, the CC and the state park course, are excellent.

A few weekends ago I played six courses in four days. Windermere, Cobblestone, Spring Valley, Woodlands, Oak Hills and Columbia CC.

Cobblestone and Spring Valley were in perfect condition. Spring Valley was actually in spectacular condition and Cobblestone was not far behind. Windermere is excellent. Columbia CC was above average. Oak Hills was better than expected, maybe the toughest greens of all six, like glass. Woodlands was ok, nothing special but worth what we paid. Tee boxes were in rough shape compared to others but not a biggie.

Charleston National is one of my favorite courses. I got to play it early and often when we were living on the Isle of Palms twenty years ago, and it is still a great course.

Santee National is a super little course.

I've played the Ocean Course at Kiawah twice and both times it ate my lunch.

I've played both courses at Wild Dunes so many times I lost count ... we were members and lived on the links course. Dunes West, Patriot's Point, I've played them numerous times.

Mid Carolina CC is worth playing. It's short but tough and always in good condition.

Still yet, I'll type it again, Sage Valley is the best kept secret in the entire Southeast if not the entire country. It is just spectacular. I had a certain coach tell me one time that he'd just about rather play Sage Valley than Augusta National. That's how good Sage Valley is and I am not kidding. I always look forward to playing that course.

I could go on and on about upstate courses I've played but I rarely play in the upstate any more. I guess the three I've played most recently, in the past 24 months or so, were Crosswinds, The Preserve and at Furman. I enjoyed the heck out of the Furman course. The Preserve, we played early in the season and it was chilly that morning but you could tell it would be ultra nice in the late Spring and early Summer and probably the late Fall with all the colors. Crosswinds was probably the coolest 18 hole Par 3 course I've ever played. I wish we had something like it down here. Par 3 courses are for drinking ... and I drank on that course so I probably should remember more about it than I do.

Live long enough and have a little money and the right friends and you can spend your whole retirement playing courses in South Carolina and never play them all. We've got that many.

Oh, hell, I almost forgot. Fort Jackson has two excellent golf courses. Wild Cat and Old Hickory ... I'm not sure how many people in SC are aware of it but Fort Jackson is known throughout the military as having the finest golf facility and courses in the entire country, I kid you not. Brass from all over the country comes to Ft Jackson just to play those two courses. They can compete with just about any CC in the state in terms of slope and layout and they are impeccably kept.

ETA: Dangit but I forgot to add some courses in the upstate which I had forgotten about because it was a fundraiser weekend mixed with golf, four courses we played in three days ... I met Kevin Cosner at the tourney as a matter of fact. The reason it didn't register in my brain as "upstate" when I was posting this was because we actually stayed in Tryon, NC in a bed and breakfast right across the border from Landrum, but the golf courses were mixed right along the SC/NC border. I'm talking about The Cliffs, we played both of the Keowee courses in one day and the other two days we played Glassy and The Valley. We may actually move up that way in the next few years if I get my way and talk my wife into retiring early. All four of those courses were exceptional, but I wouldn't want to try walking any of them. There are two or three more courses up there that are part of The Cliffs that I have yet to play but I hear they are just as great as the others.

I still haven't played there yet. Back in the mid 70's my dad set the course record there in a Calcutta. His buddy signed him up and didn't know that he was getting 9 shots. He ended up shooting 64, net 55. The folks there were not very nice to him after that

I'm trying to think who your Dad might be. A member? I'm Marshalling a junior tourney at Lexington in the morning, but I'm in a dog fight at the Pondo in the afternoon. I've been playing there off and on since the early 70s.

The Pro out there, Buddy, is a close personal friend and Gamecock Letterman.

Net 55 is strong. Handicap fudge?

no, he wasn't a member up there. It wasn't as much a handicap fudge as it was just getting as much as they could. I believe he had quit playing for about a year when his buddy asked him to play. He had been a scratch player before he quit. So I guess they assumed9 shots would have been fair to give someonewho hadn't played in a while?

Play the local courses here in Charleston. Crowfield, Legend Oaks, Coosaw from time to time, I hit em all fairly shitty but still drink and have a good time nonetheless.

You are a treasure. Yours are some of the few wall-of-text posts on this site that I enjoy seeing pop up from time to time. Always worth a read. Just wanted to say thanks.

As to the OP, I'm shite at golf and could count on both hands the total courses I've played in the state. But even the bad ones are good here. And the good ones are great.

Wildewood, Forest Lake, and Spring Valley when I used to live in Columbia.

Play Pawleys and Litchfield when I'm in that area.

Patriots down here. Played Charleston National a few times, too.

I don't golf all that much, lately. What is the University Club these days? Played out there quite a bit years ago.

Dang ... thanks Loather. That is much appreciated. (I'd do the mugs thing but I'm on my phone and it won't let me.)

Lexington CC was recently punched, fairways and greens. But the Juniors still said it played well this morning and from what I could tell the punch marks didn't effect the putting too much.

The Pondo was in excellent shape. They must have punched their greens close to a month ago but they're grown over now. They were doing some tree cutting out there today but they never got in our way. I love playing at the Pondo. Great prices, no problems with coolers. Nice people.

I'm going to Santee with some friends next weekend for our annual golf trip, this will be our 7th year in a row going and we always look forward to it. Normally we do a 3-night, 3-round golf trip but we decided 2 nights in Santee is enough (1 night hitting the "town", 1 night cooking out/playing poker) and the only 2 courses we enjoy playing there are Lake Marion and Santee National (Wyboo is pretty good but it's about 15-20 min away).

Anyone else on here ever book a trip through Santee Golf? We have 8 of us this year and it's only $130 per person for 2 nights/2 rounds at Chapel Creek Condo, right off Santee National's #1 fairway. Of course it's the summer rate but still hard to beat.

In the bag: HiBore 9.5 deg driver, an old Cleveland 16 deg wood (favorite club), KZG OC-II irons, Golden Bear 56 deg wedge which I never use and a Rossa Daytona putter. Looking to add a 3-wood to my bag soon, I need to cover a 40-yard gap between my 16 deg and my 4 iron.

One of the best upstate courses I have ever played is Musgrove Mill in Laurens county. Palmer design. My dad's first cousin is a member there, so we used to play it often. Very tough course, but it's probably been 10 years since I have played it.

I play Edgewater Golf Club in Lancaster county now when I play. Great course for the money. About 15 minutes from exit 48 on I-77.
