"Strength of schedule, head-to-head competition and championships won must be specifically applied as tie-breakers between teams that look similar," the document reads. Those were proposed to differentiate between "teams with similar records and similar pedigree."

quote:

"The criteria to be provided to the selection committee must be aligned," the document reads, "with the ideals of the commissioners, Presidents, athletic directors and coaches to honor regular season success while at the same time providing enough flexibility and discretion to select a non-champion or independent under circumstances where that particular non-champion or independent is unequivocally one of the four best teams in the country."

The document reveals the management committee's thinking about the limitations of the traditional polls that for years have determined college football's national champion. Of particular concern were occasions when the winning team in a head-to-head competition is ranked behind its opponent, or when a non-champion from a particular conference is ranked ahead of the champion.

As such, the management committee urged two approaches when it comes to polls: One, that "any polls that are taken into consideration by the selection committee must be completely open and transparent to the public"; and two, that preseason polls must be ignored.

Since that time, the Playoff has decided its selection committee will create and reveal its own top 25 poll each week beginning Tuesday, Oct. 28.

That's pretty cool. I was wondering how that was gonna work. They are basically doing the same thing the BCS did by releasing a poll in week 8. Should be interesting.

I mean really what is the need for this? I know it will promote talking heads to talk, but November is when a lot of the best games are, and if you've already pegged a top 7-8, it can only cause problems.

Just wait til after all the CCG are done, take a look at records and resumes and call it a day.

I doubt this gets used very often, especially in the case of a conference non-champion.

Take for example the LSU/Bama rematch. Under this situation, I don't see Bama making the final 4.

However, say that a 3 loss team somehow wins the SEC east and then knocks off a previously undefeated west team in Atlanta, they could certainly use this caveat to put a one loss non-champion in, as the conference champion would have 3 losses and not come anywhere near qualifying.

All of that is just a fancy way of saying: we will find a way to get Bama in.

Alabama CLEARLY would have been one of the final four teams in 2011.

It would have been pretty cut and dry that year with the top 4 being LSU, Alabama, Stanford, and Oklahoma State.

Exactly. We are talking about the best 4 teams, and that year it was LSU, Bama, OK St, and the rest of the country when it came to who should play for the NC.

I don't think the committee should bother with a top 25. Concentrate on a top 10 at most. We'll still have AP and USA today polls, yes?

Agreed. Seems pointless to do a top 25 when all you need is to decide a top 4 for the playoffs.

No. They will use opponents played in their Top 25 to help determine the Top 4 if it is not clear and to seed those 4.

This new playoff poll each week is going to be much more important than any AP or Coaches poll.

And for those who think the SEC will get 2 in the playoff most years, it is looking less and less likely. According to the voting criteria, a non-champion will have to almost indisputably show that it is better than a conference champion to be in the playoff. That is tough to do in a room full of people from all over the nation.

My big issue is the Big 12 champion. How much credit should a Big 12 champion get for being the "champion" when it gets to avoid playing an extra game, at the end of the season, against a really good team, unlike all the other champions?

The B12 has already played that extra game while the SEC was playing an 8 game schedule.

Computer programs are biased. They're just biased by how they're programmed.

If you wanted to you could write a computer ranking system that would objectively rank everyone from #2 on down and then keep your preferred team at #1.
