Low quality is one thing, but I'm more mad about the astronomical cost. Even WITH insurance, cost are fricking out of control and nothing can be done at this point. Middle class Americans simply cannot afford to get sick.

Prepare for it to only get worse under Obamacare.

IMHO it has never been bad, it's sure saved my life a couple of times. I dunno, I guess we've just always had good insurance and the only time I had to use the VA was before Clinton was in office and had a chance to begin the destruction process.

Under Obamacare it is going to get bad. My wife, a big wig for a multinational in Human Resources, tells me that what is coming on the horizon is going to be devastating to the American public in terms of poor care and higher costs. She actually predicted this stuff several years ago when it was still in the planning stages and they were having consultants rush in to help them get ahead of the game. But it's going to be worse than anyone predicted.

We've got several good friends who are doctors in various practices from Cardiology to Internal Medicine to Urology to Nephrology and they all say the same thing ... we're fricked. The system will suffer while wealth redistribution was always the purpose along with garnering more votes from the leaches and breeding more voters in the process.

And, that is why people of means in the socialized medicine countries come to the US for major operations....

Indeed

Sham lawsuits are a big reason why and the amount of money people collect from these lawsuits is astronomical. The skyrocketing cost of technology, the skyrocketing cost of infrastructure and information to include ironclad protection and the skyrocketing cost of medical malpractice and the lawsuits that come with it. Then you take in the fact that one hospital you go to may charge 750$ for an MRI and another one charges 2,000 and you can see just how fricked up the system is. Cost's need to be streamlined, caps set on the return of malpractice suits, and that will go along way towards lowering the bottom line on insurance. My insurance last year alone paid was over 15,000 dollars for a healthy individual with a family. I can't even imagine how it must be for a sick person.

That'll never happen as long as lawyers are in charge of making the laws. Damage caps would cost them money. Setting tort caps is never going to happen on a federal level at least, although some states will keep pushing for it until the end of time hopefully.

Here's the best read you'll ever find on the subject:

When you plumb billions of government dollars into one industry, is it a surprise costs are inflated.

The same could be said about college tuition.

To a large extent this is an apples to oranges comparison. First the U.S. is much larger than most of those countries both geographically and in population. Also, most of those nations have very homogeneous populations while ours is much more diverse. Our overall rating of 11 does not make sense considering the quality of our healthcare is what matters most and our quality ratings were good. The last rating, healthy lives, explains most of our lower ratings and has nothing to do with healthcare itself.

When I look at that data objectively, I come away thinking that cost is the main issue not the quality of our healthcare. We are apparently doing pretty damn well considering many of our people live unhealthy lifestyles.

It's the new American way.

frick the middle class so doctors and CEOs can make exceeding multiples over what they did even 30 years ago.

I laugh when I see doctors in old TV Westerns trading services for chickens and produce.

Anyone that mentioned Obama is this thread is a severe part of the problem.

Obama has nothing to do with the way health care has been corporatized and married to government. Obama has nothing to do with the predatory practices of big pharma. Obama has nothing to do with the shitty way insurance is set up to limit competition. Obama has nothing to do with the corporate suppression of natural fixes. Obama has nothing to do with America treating their bodies like shite.

Who is "the commonwealth fund" that did the ranking?

Did a google search and found what appears to be a counterpoint article...didn't read it cause I dont care...but I'm always suspicious of people who fund these studies
