Which SEC West program is going to fall to mediocrity by 2020: LSU, Bama, or AU?

aTm is about to become a monster program with their access to Texas recruits, unlimited budget, and what will arguably be the best stadium in the nation. With their rise to elite status, a domino is going to have to fall in the SEC West. The West cannot maintain 4 elite programs at the same time. Either LSU, Bama, or Auburn is going to fall to make room for aTm. Which team is it gonna be? (Sorry Arkansas, OM, and State, but you 3 stand no chance.)

Auburn or Bama. One state can not sustain two powerhouses for too long.

Well LSU has already shown they can maintain success while dealing with a coaching change. Auburn hasn't shown consistency, and Alabama will surely see a drop off. That is only natural when you have the best coach of our generation leave. Lsu has more access to Texas and Alabama has the most tradition of winning between the three. Auburn has to compete with Alabama being in the same state so I vote them to have the quickest drop off. None will suck any time soon though.

Texas is not a pipeline of recruits for any of the other 3. Stadiums don't matter. Also why can there not be 4 powerhouses? Bama and Auburn coexist with Alabama recruits and stealing from surrounding states. LSU has their own state. I don't see a correlation to one of them dropping off.

You can arguably say LSU has near exclusive access to LA talent and it has a very strong presence in east Texas. I think it'll be harder for Alabama to sustain 2 major programs long term...especially if Tennessee can get its shite together and recruit in AL more.

I say AU falls a bit.

and "two"

You'd think the state of Mississippi wouldn't be able to contain to suck factories for so long, but I continue to be impressed.

Before you crown A&M for the foreseeable future, let's see a season with Sumlin without Manziel

Well, with LSU's 2014 class, the 2015 class shaping up nicely, and Louisiana being absolutely ridiculous in 2016 (plus moses in 2017), LSU's demise would involve a ton of talent.

It's probably one of the two Alabama schools

Math. 4 teams can't be elite powerhouses in a 7 team division on a consistent basis, year after year. Too many losses to divide up.

Disagree with original assumption.

If AtM becomes an elite team, it won't be at the expense of lsu, au, or bama as AtM will not seriously hurt the recruiting of any of those teams.

It will just be another really tough game against AtM which isn't any different than the past 2 years in which AtM is 1-1 against AU n bama.

I think it is a great question and will be great theatre as we move forward. aTm has a great presence on an incredible recruiting state but I'm sure Texas will rejoin the fray soon. LSU has a built-in advantage few other colleges have, Saban is the best recruiter ever in a talent rich state with a school that attracts the best. Auburn used to get many overlooked great players in addition to bringing in many special studs. They seem to be getting many more super studs than ever before.

I don't have a crystal ball and can't see any of the 4 dropping off in the near future.

Team A:

3 National Championships
6 SEC championships
29 First Round NFL draft picks
6 Heisman Finalists
Leads head-to-head 59-45-6
.657 bowl win percentage

Team B:

0 National Championships
1 SEC Championships
11 First Round Draft Picks
0 Heisman Finalists (maybe wrong here)
Trails Head-to-Head
.611 bowl win percentage

One of these is not like the other.

I think Alabama will fall to a level where a 10-3 or 11-2 season is a good year. But tDecline won't start until around 2020. Either Saban's replacement won't be as good (obviously), or Saban stays too long and recruits begin to shy away from the program due to his old age (see Paterno and Bowden's last 5 years).

I guess I was looking at it from a talent and relevance perspective. I could see 4 very stout teams battling each other. Granted most go through up and down years, but I don't see talent and good coaching being an issue at any of these. That was what was referring to as a powerhouse.

Alabama will always be great in football. We won the SEC with Mike Dubose.
