I just picked up a cheap acoustic at a garage sale. I went to a local mom and pop music store and the tuner, picks, and strings cost more than the guitar.

Anyway, what is the best way to go about learning how to play this thing? The place that I bought the strings had a couple "master guitar" type books and they also offered lessons. What helped you the most?

Just wanting to get pointed in the right direction. Thanks!

Not really, if you're seriously asking. Lessons are good if you know absolutely nothing about music and chords. Beyond that it just takes years of practice, and most people get bored with it long before that.

Yeah I am really wanting to learn. I like to hunt and fish but I would like to get into another hobby, So I am going to give this a shot.

I have never played an instrument. I think I will go ahead and sign up for the lessons they offer. How much do you practice in a typical week?

I don't think I will ever be on stage but it would be nice to be good enough to play while I am drunk around a campfire. Or just use it as a time killer.

Check out this guys YouTube channel.

His other channel.

He offers lots of free lessons. I've played for about 15 years, and would have killed for something like this when I started.

Start from his beginning lessons and you'll learn some good stuff pretty quick.

Have fun!

This. Just keep practicing chord formations and practice switching from one chord to another.

Once you learn the chords you can go to youtube and learn just about any song recorded.

This happens, try adjusting the action to make it a little easier to play.

Since its a cheap guitar, you probably won't be able to do much. However, the finger thing can be a real turn off for new players.

Gotta fight through that.

What Remote shared is probably one of the best beginner teachers, and it's free. Marty has taught a lot of people to play the basics.

You're in for hours upon hours of frustration and pain before things pay off, good luck.

It's good to learn basic and easy beginner songs to you can enjoy yourself while you fight through the first few months (years) of hurdles.

A lot of good advice on here, and I will give some more, even if your fingers are too sore to actually play, you can still look at chord charts, and try to learn how the guitar actually works. Learn how to build chords, etc.

If you become a guitar thinker, becoming a guitar player can be an easier task.

Also start learning Major and minor scales and all of the notes on the neck.

A couple of Tylenol actually help with the sore fingers.

The sore fingers are a big hurdle in the beginning, but the skin will thicken soon enough.

No not really, you build up callouses rather quickly, 2 weeks - practicing 20 minutes, twice a day. But I would not "Fight Through Them AT ALL"

Work towards the callouses in a comfortable process. Over working them is not good, it is detrimental. It is something like developing stamina if you are a runner, you work up to it, you don't expect to run a marathon in the first year.

Here is he bottom line on, Don't Hurry It - Go with it and enjoy the whole experience - even learn to enjoy doing it poorly because that is the foundation to playing like you want.

Consistency and perseverance with a REAL practice schedule that is adhered to like Religion will see you quite successful.
