Sounds like UGA has some substantial issues on defense heading into 2014:

quote:

The fact of the matter is this defense doesn't have the talent that the 2011 and 2012 teams had. Outside of the linebacker group, especially Floyd and Wilson, there are a lot of unknowns, but Pruitt understands that what he can do to make this defense more competitive is to have them win the mental battle. They have to be disciplined and tough enough to make opponents earn yards.

LINK

In 2010, UGA's defense struggled but it was said then- DC Todd Grantham hadn't yet gotten his type of players in the system yet. In 2011, UGA's defense seemed to improve, even though it finished 6th in the SEC in scoring D compared to 5th in 2010.

In 2012, despite having a 2-deep on defense full of future NFL draft picks, it was again 6th in the conf. in scoring and total defense. The consensus was that the defense was plagued with too many prima-donnas looking ahead to their NFL futures, and that the influx of youth and inexperience for 2013 would be addition by subtraction. There were even vague tweets and rumors from the team that the upperclassmen on defense in '12 didn't place the team's best interests in the forefront...

In 2013 the UGA defense again struggles, which ultimately costs Grantham his job. New Man Jeremy Pruitt instills confidence into the fanbase that at last HE is the answer and will get the defense running as it should.

There was an article recently where former DT Garrison Smith made new concerning claims: this time it wasn't the talented upperclassmen - like he - to blame for UGA's defensive woes in 2013, it was the underclassmen who rose quickly to starting roles without much competition, that accounted for the dysfunction. The upperclassmen like Smith are gone....those underclassmen still remain on the roster, and will be looked to to be the leaders now. And now this article...

Just what is going on with your football program, Bulldogs, and why would such a stern disciplinarian and overall Saint like Head Coach Mark Richt be at the helm of such a mess??

That mess was good enough to beat USCLeast last year.

Hey K9...

my question is, even if Pruitt backs up all of his talk, how long will he be here? I bet we're looking for another DC in 2 years.

UGA has zero secondary. Their pass defense will be among the worst in the country.

Grantham left for a $275,000 a year raise.

Horse shite. The secondary has unknowns. The only defensive lineman that left was Smith. Everyone else returns, and there was a lot of rotation last year. They all have plenty of game experience.

Georgia's linebackers and DL will be just fine.

Talk shite about the secondary all you want, plenty of question marks, but Pruitt is a secondary coach by trade so I feel good about it.

Just like a cock!

Tell you what, post this again when the season is over. UGA's defense will be more than adequate to win the SEC and the National Championship!

Worry about that perennial model of consistency you all have in Columbia, the one that always comes in second or third every year.

Oh, I'm sorry...

I stand corrected: Grantham would still be UGA's DC into the future, but he chose to leave UGA for job upgrade at the same position at LOUISVILLE, in the ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE.....

Ehh, there's not much to feel good about there. Georgia only returns, what, one starter? I remember hearing Tray Matthews only started because a walk-on was behind him... Shaq Wiggins, Tray Matthews, and Josh Harvey-Clemons are all gone now due to transfer... Sounds like an uphill battle to say the least.

Little depth, little experience, brand new scheme, etc...

At least the SEC has a weak crop of quarterbacks as of now.

When did he say this? Do you have a link to a quote where Pruitt said that he himself is the answer?

You tell me. You seem to have done quite a bit of research on the subject.

Georgia may be staring a .500 season in the face this year. That combined with the off the field issues could be the beginning of the end of the Richt era. I would think Dawg fans would want to move in a new direction with a new coach. It looks like it is time to shake things up over there in Athens.

Not really accomplishing anything. 10 win seasons maybe but no championships. He has been there so long and it doesn't look like you are getting over the hump with the Vols on the rise again and USCe strong.

I don't have a link to a quote, because no where have I implied that Pruitt has made such a quote. You want evidence of such confidence in Pruitt from the UGA fanbase however, you can go check out the DawgRant threads about him at your leisure....

There's a lot wrong with this statement. I'm headed out the door so I'll make it short. He's brought us 2 sec titles. The first two since the early 80's. He has something like at .78 winning percentage over 13 seasons. What evidence do you have that shows he won't get one? How many seasons did Paterno and Bowden go before they got their first national title? If we were to fire Richt, who would we hire? What coach would want to come to a school after firing one of the winningest coaches in school history with no real cause other than he hasn't won a national title?

Spurrier isn't getting younger and the vols have improved but they're far from challenging for the east. We're still sitting pretty good right now, despite what you may read on the internet.

It was always going to be an uphill battle, even before the transfers/dismissals... The main area of concern for UGA's defense is their secondary, it was flat out awful last season. Half of them didn't know where they were supposed be, while the other half were out of position trying to direct the ones that were lined up wrong.... Please, take that nonsense to Louisville. This exodus is not a bad thing for UGA.

Ask Clemson how Pruitt's defense works which Held Clemson to 3 points less than Clowneys Cocks last year...
