Worried about the ramifications of selling the numbers tied to student-athletes, several schools have decided not to sell football jerseys with star players' digits on them this upcoming season, sources tell ESPN.
Three schools -- Texas A&M, Arizona and Northwestern -- will offer more generic jerseys this season.
The Aggies sold thousands of No. 2 jerseys over the past two years thanks to Johnny Manziel, who wore the number, but sources say the only jersey available at retail this year will be the No. 12 -- as in the "12th Man," a jersey the school has sold for years, alongside other numbers.
Worried about possible legal ramifications associated with selling the jersey numbers of star players such as Johnny Manziel, Texas A&M instead only will offer a generic No. 12 jersey meant to represent the school's traditional "12th Man."
Northwestern will limit sales to No. 51, which was used by current head coach Pat Fitzgerald during his heralded playing career. Arizona, meanwhile, will only offer No. 14, as in 2014.

Who gives a damn?
When I see someone at a collegiate football game wearing a jersey, I automatically assume he plays d&d in his moms basement and she bought him the jersey for his brithday

Right! The whole point of the article was people trying to trick other people into believing they are a player.

You're one of those assholes huh
I laugh every time I see a ranter say this kind of shite. It's quite possibly the weirdest thought process I've ever heard of. Dude supports his team by buying a jersey and then wearing that jersey to a game he also paid for and that's somehow indicative of some pitiful home life
Pathetic condescension is pathetic.

Which is what we've always done in the past (I.e., only sold #12 jerseys).
The sale of individual players' numbers is a relatively new thing in Aggieland--and I don't like it.
Glad to see us sticking solely with #12.

He just wants to make sure all y'all know that he would never wear a jersey.
Things like that are important to him and his circle.
He doesn't want to be ostracized by Mississippi's "in" crowd.
So just nod politely and move on.

So, now the players are claiming they own the rights to a jersey that the university owns?

He can claim rights to a number?! How over reactive
