Fun with numbers

quote:

You’ll find a table here that breaks down a bunch of offensive information per possession. Here’s the story on Georgia:
16th nationally in points per possession

17th nationally in plays per possession

13th nationally in yards per possession

86th nationally in starting field position

25th nationally in touchdowns per possession

8th nationally in field goals per possession

78th nationally in possessions per game

61st nationally in points per red zone trip

And if you don't read his blog on a daily basis you're really missing out.

That post really isn't about our D at all? Aside from starting field position, which can equally be attributed to our poor ST imo.

The fact that we

-couldn't get off the field
-allowed long drives
-allowed 3rd down conversions
-couldn't get much needed turnovers

All that screams poor starting position. Yes, our return game and particularly our "safe punt" were partially to blame. But imo, most of the blame goes to our D not stepping up.

The title of the post is

quote:

Fun with numbers – Georgia’s 2013 offense

What does that have to do with defense?

Also, the body of the post

quote:

Basically, outside the red zone, this was an offense that was quite effective when the rest of the team managed to stay out of its way. The problem was, as indicated by the starting field position and possessions per game stats, that didn’t happen as much as it needed to.

The most impressive part of that, of course, is how much Georgia was able to do on offense despite all the injuries. With the walking wounded hopefully returning to full strength, it lends support to the argument that the most important part of Hutson Mason’s role this season is to be a good game manager. Now if something can be done about that whole rest of the team staying out of the offense’s way thing…

ETA: Unless I'm missing your point and you're pointing out how bad the defense was because our offense was still pretty good.

I'm pointing out how bad our starting field position was last year. The positive side is how great the O was despite that fact.

Well yeah, but none of that was mentioned in the blog. I'm not talking crap, as our defense most certainly was pathetic...it just seems like the linked blog was more about offense.

Think happy thoughts.

I didn't have shite to do yesterday so I watched the 02 auburn game. Man I miss the hell out of that era of the richt tenure. Just physical, hard nosed, tough arse football and we played lights out on defense. Our jerseys looked a hell of a lot better too.

I'm growing on the new ones we got last year. It reminds me of the Bears jerseys which are my favorite in the NFL.

Yep, the possessions per game is telling. As you say it suggests that our defense could not get off the field. What's odd though is our run defense was significantly better than in 2012 while or pass defense was much worse. Apparently opponents were getting a lot of first downs passing.

The starting field position was even worse. This tells me that we got very little return yard on either kickoffs or punts and that when our defense did stop the opposing offense, it was deep in our end of the field.

Interesting combination there. I would guess a lot of our points were longer passes (i.e. outside of red zone). When we did get there, we stalled and were forced to kick field goals. Hence...
quote:

8th nationally in field goals per possession

Is that an accurate assessment? Direct reflection on losing our premier RB's and having to get it done in the passing game?

Don't need stats to know how bad the defense was. Just rerun videos of each game.
