I saw this over on the Bama board from Roll Tide 1987 when I was wondering what they thought of Jeryl Brazil transferring over there and this is just incredible regarding the defensive stats of that 2011 Alabama team:

vs. Kent State: 90 total yards, 6 first downs, -9 yards rushing
@ Penn State: 251 total yards, 80 of them on the final drive of the game
vs. North Texas: 169 total yards, 68 yards rushing, 0 points allowed
vs. Arkansas: 226 total yards, only two sustained drives all game
@ Florida: 222 total yards, 9 first downs, all 10 points came on first two drives
vs. Vanderbilt: 190 total yards, 8 first downs, 0 points allowed
@ Ole Miss: 141 total yards, 9 first downs, 28 yards rushing
vs. Tennessee: 155 total yards, 6 first downs, not a single first down allowed in the 2nd half
vs. LSU: 239 total yards, allowed a mere 3 third down conversions, no TD given up
@ Mississippi State: 131 total yards, 9 first downs, 12 yards rushing
vs. Georgia Southern: 341 total yards, 302 yards rushing, only 2 third down conversions
@ Auburn: 140 total yards, 9 first downs, 0 offensive touchdowns
vs. LSU: 92 total yards, 5 first downs, 0 points allowed

I am a well known non-fan of Alabama, but I forgot just how dominant that defense was. All that I can remember from that season is LSU beating that team 9-6 and then losing the greatest heartbreaker of all time (for me) 21-0 later. But, I think that LSU fans need to give that 2011 Alabama team credit - and it probably wouldn't hurt for Bama fans to give the 2011 LSU team credit either, considering that Bama's greatness that year was highlighted even more by pounding a truly great LSU team.

Anyway, I am all about giving credit where it is due. That Bama team deserves it.

If this happens, I never want to hear another Bammer jab about LSU or Auburn having criminals again.

Well duh, unless you want to bring up the unbeaten Sewanee teams...... though, if you put both on the same field, 2011 Alabama crushes them.

Top three or four for sure. Why are you so interested about a team that you hate?

2011 is the best college defense I've seen period.

The number of 3 and out's they put up was ridiculous.

When the other team got a first down you could see how pissed off it made them.

What's interesting is they didn't have a lot of turnover generating ballhawks, it was just a complete suffocation and shut down of everything the offense was trying to do.

You can't really compare them to defenses of like the leather helmet era though, it was a completely different game back then and that's about as apples to oranges as you can get.

Best I have seen in my lifetime. I was at 9-6. The talent on the field that night was unprecedented in terms of future draft pics.

Bama 2011 may be the greatest. You can make a case for them or for others.

But I have absolutely no doubt that there has never been a game with better combined defenses. I love those two teams. 9-6 was one of the great games in history, IMO.

Yeah. The '11 defense didn't sack you or take the ball away from you, they just wouldn't let you go anywhere.

Was posted recently, but while we are on the subject.....

quote:

In that game alone, which LSU won 9-6 in overtime, there were 28 defensive players who played in the game -- 14 on each side -- who would get drafted. That includes 10 first-rounders.

quote:

The grand total of future draftees who played in the game was 42, and that doesn’t even count another handful of players who made NFL rosters as undrafted free agents. “You don’t see that every Saturday,” said Phil Savage, former Cleveland Browns general manager and current executive director of the Senior Bowl.

quote:

“It’s as close to an NFL game as you’re ever going to see in terms of a college matchup, with so many future NFL players on each side,” Savage said.

Both LSU and Alabamas defenses that year were absolutely unbelievable. I would them both in the top 5 all time.

ETA the 92 Bama D was pretty damn stout too!
