oh, I agree. I think this is a huge mistake. The SEC got tired of the bitching from people who went to starkville.

game on!

First ribbon boards, now canned muzak. There goes college football. Might as well start drinking.

Are they sitting around trying to find ways to make the live game experience shittier?

This couldn't be more wrong. It was way better when they were banned. People rang them whenever the hell they wanted.

I mean, what's to stop Enter Sandman between every play? Going to games is so overrated these days. I guess they want the attendance to keep plummeting.

No.. Cowbells were "banned" at the gate in the 70s. Then in the 80s refs were given a rule that they could reset the game clock if it was deemed noise makers were interfering (Watch Bama @ MSU game from 1981 and see the QB whining to the refs he can't hear).

Then when State hit a good stretch of football in the 90s there was a rule that State could get flagged for noisemakers. I think we only got flagged once...

Then in 2010 (I think), there was a Cowbell compromise meaning we could bring them in games but only ring the at certain times (which, of course, we rang them whenever we wanted).

ETA: Looks like the rule is we still will not be allowed to ring when QB is over center, but we can ring any other time during the game. The previous compromise was during TOs, after scores, and in between Quarters.

The cowbell rule was unenforceable. I guess they were tired of dealing with it.

No. It's enforceable. Give the home team a 15 yard penalty every time it gets out of control. Of course, with Miss. State every time the game goes sideways the bells....never mind. You are right. Unenforceable.

It'd be enforceable if they didn't let the cowbells through the gates. Sure, a few get in, but most get tossed in the trash.

Any rule that makes it easier for them to ring cowbells is a good rule in my book. They will never ever ditch the redneck white trash stereotype they have as long as the are ringing fricking cowbells at games. I think it's great.

I think it's really about some schools wanting to play more canned music at games which means the band will be playing less.

It's good for MSU but not so promising for certain SEC band programs.
