Last week, ethnic Russians in eastern Ukraine declared a new "confederation" called New Russia, and also adopted an official flag: LINK.

The Bars without the Stars. I wonder how they came up with that flag?

That's the same flag (minus the stars) that stood up against the idea of global banking and debt based currency 150 years ago.

Interesting that it's being used to stand up to the same thing today.

The Russian confederation one is a different shape.

The *official* confederate battle flag has a true square shape and all the rectangular ones are WRONG.

The bear is already Russia's mascot; seems a good fit. At least we know they will never invade Nebraska, Georgia, or any other state hosting a championship.

Not completely true.

While the square battle flags were the first produced and were the ones used mainly in the eastern theater by Lee's Army of Northern Virginia (and are often called ANV or Virginia battle flags), there were rectangular battle flags produced and used.

They were used by the Confederate navy as a naval Jack, flown from the bow of the ship when not underway, from 1863 - 1865.

There were also rectangular battle flags produced and distributed out of the Dalton (Georgia) depot. These flags were made in Augusta, shipped to Atlanta and then up to Dalton. These flags were issued mainly to units in the Army of Tennessee beginning in 1864 and were carried during the Atlanta Campaign.

That region, including Sevastopol, has deep ties to the Russian Navy.

This is a version of Russia's Naval Jack with Saint Andrew's cross:

Sort of make sense now?

Wrong flag. That's not the Stars and Bars.

People who call the battle flag "the stars and bars" are one of my biggest pet peeves.

My understanding is that those rectangular flags were essentially a mistake.

In any case, thanks for highlighting the difficulty of the battle flag.
