I usually drink 5-6 days/week to complete intoxication and passing out for the last 20 years. I've never really had any issues with work or finances until about a year ago. Things have steadily gone down hill since then. My marriage isn't as good as could be. I have put myself in more financial strain. My business isn't doing as well as it should be.

Last week I finally was fed up with feeling like shite most days and having all the financial and personal stress. So, I stopped cold turkey. It's been a week and I haven't had any physical withdrawals but I have been on edge mentally. I haven't felt depressed or anything but, when i get off work, I feel a bit lost.

So, how did you folks cope with this? Did you do the AA thing? Are there people that can just quit cold turkey and continue to stay sober? Will I ever be able to get to the point of being able to enjoy a beer with friends without going overboard?

I would have medically qualified as an alcoholic my last two years of undergrad, though it didnt negatively impact my life or studies.

That's what I did but mine was more of a 6 month thing and not a 20 year thing so I imagine it's much harder.

Honestly you will never know unless you try. It's different for everybody. I personally believe I could but I just haven't as of now (sober about 14 months btw).

And I would recommend making a doctor's appointment and having blood work done. Thats a pretty intense history of drinking and you may very well have damaged your liver.

Yeah, I thought I would have more physical withdrawal symptoms but, as of now, I've had none.

When I first stopped I had some agitation, my hands were a little shaky for a couple days and I had a little nausea but other than that it wasn't a big deal.

With 20 years under your belt, I imagine it's like having an itch that you really don't wanna scratch anymore.

I plan on doing that soon. One thing i do have going for me is that I never got into pills and have rarely taken any kind of pain relievers.

Yeah, I got drunk a couple times a week at least for two years but the last half of senior year or so I was drunk 5-6 nights a week.

Thankfully, I wasnt psychologically hooked.

I don't think I was either. I never had any cravings or anything at least.

Same here. I was probably spending 100 bucks/day on alcohol and thats not including cheap beer or beer at friends' houses and stuff.

I honestly don't miss anything about getting drunk anymore. I like going out and not waking up the next morning feeling like I got my arse beat.

Well I wouldn't be able to afford that at all. Unfortunately for me I have lots of friends who are bartenders and can go out and get $60+ Worth of drinks and have a tab of something ridiculous like $5. It makes it very hard to resist going out.

I will say that last year I avoided going to football games bc I didn't want to even temp myself by being around a bunch of drinking. This year I've already bought my season tickets though.

I think a big difference in my drinking now would be that I don't have the daily access to it like I did a year ago. Where I live now there aren't house parties every day or a square with 10 bars to go to every night. I could probably go out and get slammed on Friday night and it be okay. I just don't have that much desire to anymore.

The one thing that makes it kinda hard is my friends are wondering where I am. I haven't talked any of them in a week. In my mind they are my enablers and I need to distance myself from them for a while.
