I personally DGAF. Adapt or die.
eta: I just stumbled upon this article

Approximately 41 million people receive speeding tickets in the U.S. every year, paying out more than $6.2 billion per year, according to statistics from the U.S. Highway Patrol published at StatisticBrain.com. That translates to an estimated $300,000 in speeding ticket revenue per U.S. police officer every year. State and local governments often lean on this source of income when they hit financial trouble.

How is that even possible? That is over $800 a day every day of the year per cop. That seems really high

$800 bucks is around 4 speeding tickets. Not hard to do.

Good.
Assuming the roads are safer there's nothing not to like here. Unless you're a small town cop who's salary is based on speeding fines.

They'd just increase the fees for vehicle inspections or make them mandatory in all 50 states. Then add a fricken tax of some kind.

As long as it's for the children.

They will certainly adapt. With no need to sit and clock speeders, they will be free to patrol the streets and neighborhoods looking for any and all infractions, which will have fines doubled or even tripled. Parking tickets will probably be on the order of a grand or more.

Yeah, the idea that the depts are going to just accept the loss in revenue is adorable. Even now they are seizing private property they have no right or reason for taking to meet budget shortfalls in their precincts.

Yeah, I'm calling BS on that. If that were true my town would be taking in more on speeding tickets than it does from 4 riverboat casinos. Not buying it.

The budget that gets hit won't be law enforcement (at least in Alabama). It will be the court system. When you pay that ticket, most of the money goes to court costs and not the fine.
Here are a couple of links to some breakdowns:

You'll notice that only 8-10% goes to the local government's general fund. Another 30% goes to the state general fund. None of it goes directly to the LE agency. Anybody that thinks budgets are driven by ticket revenue simply haven't been around very many municipal budgets.
Also, the only way a self driving car doesn't get tickets is if the vehicle isn't allowed to exceed the posted limit?
You going to accept a car that forces you to drive the speed limit?

Good, I don't like cops anyways.

Not really.
Most departments are not revenue-based.

If it means no more traffic lights (because computer driven cars can coordinate with each other to determine optimal speeds given crossing routes), then frick yeah.
Oh, and sleeping on a long drive home? Again, frick yeah.

It won't mean no more lights because heavy traffic areas won't allow for that level of coordination. Intersections that see traffic counts in the thousands or even tens of thousands a day will still have to be controlled.
I can certainly see the benefit of an optional autopilot mode, but not one that mandates I drive a set speed.

Good points.
Plus, the average for all cops is misleading. There are traffic enforcement divisions and individual overtime hounds who spike the overall numbers. Many LEOs never give out a single speeding ticket a year.

You wanna clarify that?
I don't know about other states, but most small town PDs in Louisiana would not exist if they weren't writing tickets and fabricating charges on the interstates in Louisiana.
