Never understood why he wasn't in already. It used to just piss me off every year. I couldn't take it seriously if someone like him was left off the list.

Apparently the HoF coordinates with the universities as to which former players to induct in a given year and Bama worked to get in some lesser known greats from earlier years before pushing for DT which everyone knew was a lock. At any rate, thrilled my childhood favorite will be inducted and add 1 more accolade to his impressive resume.

It's a shame he couldn't be at his own induction, but it's about fricking time it happens.

DT became eligible 10 years after his last collegiate game in 1988, which would mean 1998 he would be eligible.

Bama players selected since then:

John Hannah 1999
Johnny Musso 2000
Billy Neighbors 2003
Cornelius Bennett 2005
Woodrow Lowe 2009
Gene Stallings (Coach) 2010
Marty Lyons 2011

Having a hard time finding it now, but a few months ago a former NFF employee tweeted that the NFF coordinates with colleges as to which nominees from that school to push in a given year

That's a solid list, but Derrick was still way overdue to get in. His life ended so tragically, really sad.

Greatest Alabama player that these old yellow eyes have ever seen. What a great talent and man he was.
