What really bothers me is the unjustified expectation many Alabama fans have that the 2014 season will mirror the historic 2008-2013 period.
Bama fans shouldn't be overly surprised if this team hits a 'worst case' scenario of adversity and finishes with 7-8 wins.

Using the run of the last few years to justify expecting another 10+ win year is just setting everyone up for undue disappointment.

Let's be honest and understand with some question marks at key positions fans shouldn't be nearly so confident at a 10+ win year.

I would like to agree with you but with the amount of talent assembled, anything less than 10 wins is under achieving by a wide margin.

The fact that people are still complaining about the games we didn't win over the last 5 years, despite winning 3 NCs tells me that the melt will be strong this year.

No chance. 10 wins minimum.

I agree with you. The schedule is easy. It still won't stop some from melting down on this board

I could see loses in around seven games assuming Bama wets the bed.

Only possible loses are LSU, A+M, and Auburn.

Mike Shula won 10 games. Mike Dubose won 10 games. Franchione won 10 games. Every coach since Ears won at least 10 games.

With Saban and the #1 recruiting classes he's brought in, expecting anything less than 10 wins is wrong.

7-8 wins? Who do you think we lose to if we finish with 7 wins?

And even if you set your expectations there, are you still not going to be disappointed with 7 wins?

edit - I see your potential loss list.

Well, we do have some uber retarded Bama fans on this board, so that won't surprise anyone.

I'll be happy with 10 wins, but I expect 11+ including postseason given the talent we have stockpiled.

I would be very disappointed with anything less than 10 wins. That is based on the talent assembled, coaching staff, and monetary commitment made by the school.

With that said, it is still college football...so...who the frick knows what is going to happen?

Yikes. And I thought I was the resident negabammer.

I think ten wins is very reasonable and anything less than that is a huge disappointment. I don't think this is a national title or bust year, but could you honestly say you'd be perfectly content with Bama having 8 wins next year?

It would take a season like UF had last year to move the sights down from 10 wins.

I'll be disappointed without a doubt.
But unlike some fans of the capstone I wouldn't be cactus swinging angry just at a bad year.
They happen. Saban still wears the pants and I have no reason to doubt he'd right the ship.

It's not just Bama fans. Pre-season polls have been putting us in the top 5 which is too high IMO based on question marks at QB, OL, and CB. At the same time we have as much talent as any other team in the country and I expect 10-12 wins (including post-season) depending on things like injuries, team chemistry, and how the ball bounces in close games.

What question marks are we referring to. The last time we replaced a starting QB we won 2 NC in a row and that was with a inexperienced QB at that. I am not on the Coker bandwagon just yet but in my opinion is a lot further along than AJ was coming in.

Our OL or DBs can not play any worse than they did last year.

DL looks to be the best yet under Saban. LB unit is never a concern with the talent we have amassed. And 2008-13 has yet to have the talent we will have for offensive weapons(if healthy) this coming fall. Special teams seems to always be our weak unit.

So please tell me where we have questions that would concern me about dropping 5 games in the regular season. I am not saying we will win another NC, though not out of the question, but this team in my opinion is far better than 2010 or 2013. The 2 bad seasons under Saban during that span that both finished with only 10 wins.

The only games that concern me going into the season are:

UF-only because CWM will be playing for his job and they will roll in 3-0 trying to prove something. Still think we win but may be a lot closer then we want.

LSU-always a tough game but we get them home and have a bye prior to the game.

AU-Who may be undefeated and the winner of the game ends up in Atlanta, but Saban is now 15-1 in his last 16 rematched(if I remember correctly) so I like our chances.

WVU will not even be close. Ole Miss we get a bye before we play them. A&M will finally have to match up with us for talent and I do not think they have it yet. UT may limp into the game 2-5 and has no shot. MSU always seems to be a hard game because we give so much against LSU but we win even though maybe not pretty.

I am actually excited about the upcoming seasons moreso than any other except 2009. Yeah we won a NC in 11 & 12 but it was no lock. 2009 was the only season I have thought for sure going in we were the best team in the country. 2010 I had high hopes because of talent but as the season got closer and injury to MI and the MD issues my hopes were fading. But this season I am pumped and think everyone won else needs to beware.

i dont think expecting 10 wins is unrealistic, considering the only season we didnt make it to 10 wins in sabans tenure was 2007. We have a team absolutely bursting with talent, and they seem to have the proper attitude this year, which will go a long way. We have a relatively easy schedule, and everybody else seems to have just as many question marks as we do. there are reasons for optimism in all the question mark areas (except maybe oline). the dline looks absolutely monstrous almost 3 deep. the cbs situation should be much improved, with all those young guys playing so much last year, and supremely talented players like brown and humphrey in the mix, and if the dline is better the CBs will have an easier time of it. QB is the biggest question, but when have we ever had a guy with as much potential to be a dynamic force coming in? Coker (assuming he wins the job) has all the tools to be a monster, size, speed, athleticism, huge accurate arm, and has been under some good qb coaching in a very similar system. and he will be surrounded by the kind of supporting talent that is almost unprecedented. On the Oline, I think we have the guys to be really good (not 2012 oline great), they just need to gel and play with some more attitude and toughness.

So you're arguing QB isn't a question mark? Because that's all I'm saying.

Sure they can. Much worse actually. And I stated they're question marks because heading into the summer it's anybody's guess who will be starting at a couple spots in both those units.

2014 is a rebuilding year. It'll still be a better year than all but a handful of teams.

FTR I don't agree with the OP about losing 5 games. That borders on the absurd.

Not possible.

Nine wins are guaranteed, 10 or more likely.

I think the OL and the secondary will be worse, especially early season. Still 9 or more wins with ease.
