How good is the SEC compared to recent history, rant?

Last year was a down year. The signal callers and skill spots were great but the defenses experienced historic attrition the year before. This year we watched Mettenberger, Murray, Manziel, McCarron and Shaw come and go. However, the defenses will be better. It's really tough to get a beat of the strength of the SEC. Certainly with all the running back talent coming back, it will be more ground and pound than usual and leaning on defense. That seems like a good recipe.

There's more parity now; hence your characterization of down year.

I've been saying for two years now that 2014 was going to be the most brutal, hard to call, year in the history of the SEC. There are legitimately eleven teams in the conference this year that could beat anyone on any given Saturday.

Let downs, failures to focus, trap games ... it's going to be very tough for anyone to go undefeated this coming season.

That is why FSU coasted through an ACC schedule to beat your champion? I would say this characterizes the SEC every other year. I think the SEC champion in 2014 will be more sharp.

Everyone has an off game.
And no offense intended at all towards Auburn, but they weren't the best SEC team last year.
The stars were aligned for em to make it to that game, though.

Maybe. Seems many on this board are predicting your Ducks in the Final Four. Do you see this as another big year for y'all?

Right. FSU pretty much plowed everyone, met the SEC champion, and was fortunate with a final seconds TD for a 3 point win.

The defense needs to make strides. I will have to see it to believe it. We got some horses on defense but we need to pull it together. Pellum at DC will hopefully be more innovative. Aliotti had a terrible game plan staying in a 3-4 against Stanford.

My point is that it was the first year for the SEC to lose in recent history. It was a down year. It was still the best conference obviously but down relative to itself.

Not sure! Crazy things are going down on that Campus this year. They should start and finish in the top 10. My guess!

I will neither agree nor disagree with this statement. I will say I don't think any other SEC team would have beaten FSU or given them a tougher game than Auburn did.

FSU was a complete team without noticeable flaws. No team in the SEC last year was what I would consider a complete team. They each had their share of flaws.

7 SEC teams in the final top 25 which other conference can claim 50% or more of its teams in 2013?

There was no 'super' team, true, and I doubt there will be one in 2014. But I think we will have 3 or 4 teams that are as good as any in the country, imo.

Read my post...best conference but down relative to itself. That is hard to argue and was easy to see going into the season, especially after looking at the analytics. I'd never seen the amount of attrition on the defensive side of the ball.

This year is different. There will be quite a few monster DL but the signal callers are new. It will be back to ground and pound and holding on with the defense. That my point here. It's not to get into a immaterial conference vs. conference debate.

Iron sharpens Iron unless Au wins...then its fairy dust.

A lot is going to depend on improvements that we are not sure of yet. QB play for LSU and UA, the D for AU, does the UF OC pan out, etc...there are lot of questions right now.

Wasn't looking to have a conference vs conference debate. How is a conference down with 7 ranked teams? How was the SEC down relative to itself?

That is why an experienced FSU team with a HC that has been there for years barely beat a young AU team with a 1st year HC.

I think 2011 gets referenced with 3 top 5 teams or 2012 with 5 teams in top 10 but last year the QB play outweighed any lack of D and it was still pretty strong.

So how would the OP define the conference as being 'up'?
