Sam is NOT the first openly gay player drafted into the NFL. He is simply a publicity hungry media hound.

Jackie Walker came out after his senior season in 1972. He was drafted in the 6th round, 148th pick overall.

quote:

Walker was an All-American linebacker in 1970 and 1971 for Tennessee — the first black All-American in Vols history. He was also the first black team captain in the Southeastern Conference, and he still shares the NCAA record for the most interceptions returned for a touchdown (five) in an era when the ball was not thrown as much as it is today.

I figured A&M would claim the first gay player, not Tennessee.

This thread isn't about Sam. It is about Jackie Walker.

Sam couldn't carry Walker's jockstrap, even though he might have wanted to...

What does having a sig pic have to do with starting another thread on a topic "everyone is sick of"... Judging by how many threads have been started on Sam i think we have a lot of closet cases on tRant, otherwise yall would let it die.

He had me throughout the draft even with the cake kiss but since the Oprah thing was reported I've lost some respect for him. Is there anyone left under the age of 30 with enough dignity to say no to a reality show?

1972 was an entirely different climate than 2014.

Walker was not glorified.

Bill Battle the current AD at Alabama was Walker's head coach.

quote:

Herzbrun coached both Walker brothers at Fulton High School before he was hired at Tennessee. He had been close to the family for a decade, but recalls that as he and Battle were driving across town to the east-side YWCA to attend a party celebrating Jackie’s being drafted into the NFL, they were worrying about what they were going to encounter.

Battle told Herzbrun he wasn’t going to stay if Jackie showed up in a dress. Herzbrun offered to go in first and look around. The head coach waited in the car while Herzbrun looked for Jackie.
When he spotted an attractive woman who looked a lot like Jackie, he tapped her on the shoulder and asked, “Who the hell are you?”

“She said ‘I’m Jackie’s sister.’ It was pretty embarrassing.”

How can you pimp yourself out to the willing?? Marshall Henderson was right when he said he was not going to watch SportsCenter and the ESPN.

The media loves to be the first one to be wrong and shove crap down our throats.

Interesting article, but Al-Jazeera is not the most credible website.

I didn't read your OP, but I cringe every time I hear "Michael Sam...the first openly gay football player drafted"

There is no fricking way he's the first. The other were just too scared(which is sad) to admit it...or, they WERE open about it, but, it wasn't a big deal, thus not causing this ridiculous media shite storm.

I think it's downright stupid for a man to be attracted to another man. But, there are worse decisions to be made. And many of them harm the shite out of society, while being gay does not. For the life of me I can't figure out why we focus on gay people so much. It's neither here nor there in the grand sceme of things, really.

I remember Jackie Walker. UT fans have been fighting for years to get him into the College Football Hall of Fame. It is no secret he was excluded because he was gay.

It is a very comprehensive, well-written, and thorough article.
