Do we have any avid runner amoungst us? Just starting to get into it. Ran 3.5 miles today at around 10 min mile. Pretty slow but I spent the last 5 years whoring and drinking my way around Tuscaloosa.

I ran in a pair of New Balance 993 today but I think I need to get a lighter pair. They seemed heavy and my ankles were a little sorer than id like them to be. Overall though not to displeased with my progress today all things considered.

Do y'all run outdoor or on a treadmill? What kind of distances do y'all do? General discussion welcome and encouraged.

Outdoor. My neighborhood has a natural 5.1 k loop. If it's at night I run once and if I have time in the day I run twice around. So between 5.1-10.2 k. At 5.1 k it's about 8 a mile and 10.2 k about 9.5.

Edit: 5 k is a little less than 3.5 miles

Try running outside. You use 30% more oxygen compared to a treadmill. Also the wind resistance you feel helps you work harder. I'm just starting out too, kinda.

I was under the impression they were serviceable running shoes. I was wrong.

And yea C.Tide I plan on doing my running outside. I don't like treadmills

It's best if you can find scenic route to run rather than a track. You'll be more preoccupied in the scenery and can run longer in my experience (IME?)

I'm walking with the hope of eventually getting up to running, but I don't know that I'll ever be able to with my knee. I've gotten to where I can't stand to walk on a treadmill in a gym and luckily Louisville has a great parks system.

I got a lighter pair of New Balances so I could go sockless and found out real quick it just isn't happening.

Bicycles. Think bicycles. But when you're sliding across the pavement, don't think about me.

Luckily where I'm at is pretty suburban and scenic though I'm afraid if I run with headphones I'll get hit by a car.

And belle I hear ya on the knee issues. I broke my ankle last February and it bothered me for the first time today since I hurt it. Definitely discouraging but I figure I'll just get a support brace or something.

I run about 25 miles a week and have done several half marathons. I usually run on the treadmill in the summer and winter and outdoors when its tolerable in the Houston hear. I try to knock out 4-5 miles a day, five days a week at around a 7 minute pace on a good day.

Personally, I love the New Balance Minimus shoes for running. Your legs are sore as hell for the first few runs but after that they are awesome.

Dont feel bad about your pace, theres actually a lot of evidence that the optimal distance/speed for runs is 3-5 miles at a time at an 8-10 minute pace. The benefits start dropping off after that. I run faster just because Ive been doing it long enough that I dont get the runners high anymore with a slower pace

Kentucky just ranked 48th on some list of cycle friendly states. I'm not trying to get killed.

Just go in the park system you were talking about; take some scenic loops a few times

True. I'm alright with the walking though because I can still cover a pretty good distance. My goal is to walk one of the mins here next year around Derby (April/May).

I made the same mistake last summer.

I'm the opposite. I will take my dog for long walks, but I find running easier when I have a tv in front of me.

I actually ended up buying a stationary bike last summer for my apartment. Its a great workout.

keep it up.
Useful fun fact: joints hurt more when there is or there is going to be rain. So if you know tomorrow it's gonna rain, that's not going to be a very painless walk.

I love biking but I just feel like I get a better workout from running.

Yeah I have fricked up ankles from years of basketball, so running long distances can be a nightmare for me sometimes.
