So we lost Punter to UT. Does anyone care?

I didn't know much about the kid and he was going to give only 2 years correct?

It matters a lot in so far as Namon Wright sounds about ready to jump ship to UCLA too, so you have basically nobody at the shooting guard position at all to start the season if that happens. In that regard, we don't know what sort of college career Punter will have but he's a warm body at that spot at minimum which is what's needed. I actually think he could be a pretty good college player.
That said, Tennessee sold him on setting tons of ballscreens for him up top and giving him freedom to do whatever he wanted off those. Obviously that's how Haith sold the kid on Mizzou, as we all know our whole offense the past 2 years has been ballscreen for guard, ballscreen for guard, ballscreen for guard. I imagine all Mizzou fans are pretty tired of watching one or two designated scorer/offensive leader guards play hero ball while others watch so if that is why the kid wanted to come, its probably OK that he went a different direction long term.
I think once Beidschid is eligible he can play the 2 guard just fine, he's a good shooter and solid enough passing skills to hang. Rotate him for offense and Deuce Bello for defense there and it'd be OK. Ricky Kreklow transfer option would help a lot at that spot for warm bodies off the bench too. Make no mistake though, no matter how this plays out next year's team's main weakness is gonna be outside shooting and scoring from the backcourt, there's no way around that it seems.

This is a good point. Any new news on Krek? I know he isn't the long term answer, but if he can spot up in a corner from time to time?

His family said he will visit 5 schools and Mizzou is one of the 5 (seeing as CoMo is his home it'd be pretty hard not to "visit" Mizzou but hey, we made the list whee). Butler, Nebraska, Creighton and I forget the other one besides us. But yeah, he won't light the world on fire but an experienced shooting guard who can come off the bench and knock down an outside shot our two and hustle for you, again more than what we have at that spot now so he'd help.

No. Not much. Yes, we're weak at SG. It's doubtful that a middling JUCO prospect is the answer. He could've helped, sure. I'm just not sure it's that big of a deal to lose him.

Could care less. I really want that Mitchell kid. If we could snag him and keep Wright with Allen on board it becomes a pretty solid recruiting haul IMO. Especially when in a transition and gets me excited for the future.

Thing with juco prospects is you just never know. Punter could be the next Mitch Richmond and we will be kicking ourselves next year. Or he could be the Keaneau Post of shooting guards and we dodged a huge bullet.
I don't really like Shelton Mitchell's scouting video at all. I know he's a 4 star prospect but so was Post, saw way too many bad passes resulting in turnovers, missed layups etc to think Mitchell will be able to help much immediately next year. If we get him I hope I'm wrong.

Would have had about the same impact as Allen, just different positions. So no, not really concerned with losing him.

Richmond was a can't miss out of JUCO. There was no buzz about Punter that even compares to Mitch. There just isn't the talent coming out of JUCO these days.
I was really underwhelmed by Mitchell's video, too. A PG who can't really go right is a novelty, but probably not a good one.

ATX, good post. Cam is a very good shooter who can create his own shots and Kreklow is a good spot-up guy.
One thing you mentioned that people will be pleasantly surprised about is the disappearance of the "3-man-top-of-the-circle-weave" offense and using post men as screen-setting pylons. Anderson brings a totally different offense that much more resembles real basketball. There won't be 4 guys standing around waiting for the scorer to do something.

I look forward to variations hubbed around a conventional offense. I realized in Haith's system we lived and died by guard play and jumpers and that won't get you far at any level. We need somebody like Anderson right now and I wish him well.

I wish him well too. Not holding my breath for a Final Four though.

Seems like we had a really good one when Jake Harry was here, maybe we'll be ok, who knows.

I doubt he amounts to much. Mizzou is better off.

Well, I'm not saying this to defend Haith, because he's gone and I've gotten comfortable with KA, but I don't think we saw Haith's 'system' last year. I think what we saw was an adaptation to try to win games. His first year, they spent a lot of effort feeding the post with Ratliffe, even though he was the only inside threat we had. The second year, they fed AO a ton, and he scored more and more as the season progressed. Last year they fed it inside a lot at the beginning, but it wasn't paying off much except in turnovers and missed shots, so they went with what we saw and everyone bitched about. The only scorers were the guards. Only one of them was a real outside scoring threat, the rest (specifically Clarkson) were slashers who scored by getting to the hole and/or getting fouled. I think the staff made the decision to run that offense because of the pressure to win now, and it was the best they could get out of that group.
Hopefully kids like JW3 and TJ can step it up. If someone becomes that go to guy inside, it will take a lot of pressure off the guards and give them more room. I actually thought Clark looked better at the SG than as a PG most of the time last year-and I wonder if that judgement hasn't been made by the HC and staff now, which would explain why they seem to be targeting PGs beyond Wright as a SG.

I think we're targeting PGs because we only have one in Clark and then there's Rector. It's tough to make it through a season with one PG.
Posted on 5/5/14 at 8:41 pm to the808bass
I'm not that down on Rector. I've seen too many kids who looked lost and out of control as frosh turn into some pretty good players. From what I've heard we have offers out two PGs (J. Wright and Chauca) and we're bringing a third in for a visit, Mitchell. According to PM MU has interest in Mitchel Wilbekin, another PG (former Tulsa commit) from FLA. We sure seem to be looking at and offering a lot of PGs to just be looking for some more depth. Maybe they expect someone (Rector?) to transfer, or maybe this late in the game they are throwing offers out to try to land SOMEONE at PG and will rescind any offers at PG after one commits, but it sure seems like they are trying to pick up a couple imo.
ETA: I see just now that Wilbekin committed to Wake Forrest today, so his name is off that list.
