Nick Chubb recruitment could have been very different.

First of all-Apologies for using AJC for anything but toilet paper. But according to Nick Chubb in today's AJC Recruiting Rewind article, if South Carolina had actually shown he was a priority during recruiting, things could have been very different for him. Spurrier never even appeared in town when Chubb was in Columbia. Interesting...

quote:

Chubb made his college decision early, pledging to UGA last summer, and took only official visit (the Bulldogs).

However, things might’ve gotten interesting if a couple of Chubb’s visits to a rival SEC school had gone a little differently.
When asked which school was the biggest disappointment during the recruiting process, Chubb quickly responded, “South Carolina.”

“I had my date set (last spring) when I was going to commit to a school. All of sudden, I hear from South Carolina the next day, so I pushed my time back so I go down there and visit with those coaches. I pushed it back just for them.
“When I go over there to visit, Coach (Steve) Spurrier isn’t even there.
So I waited a week and came back to visit again. And he’s still not there. I don’t know. I just didn’t feel like I was important to them.”

Soon after, Chubb went ahead and committed to UGA. He’s happy with his decision, but admits it would’ve been a lot more difficult if not for the unlikely turn of events.

“It would’ve been close between South Carolina and Georgia because I grew up really liking South Carolina,” Chubb said

Any Gamecock recruitniks know what happened here?

Not trying to start a flamefest, I was just wondering how this could happen to a stud 5 star tailback that would seem to be a priority in Columbia.

This is the case with alot of recruits where they feel a little bit jaded but Spurrier may have had prior engagements or may not like to participate in recruiting until they know the kid is interested. The reason I say this is Spurrier was heavily involved in the BAW recruitment so maybe the visits were just a filler and at the time Chubb wasn't rated as high. When he committed I am pretty sure he was a mid 4 star and he shot up the boards late.

Spurrier just didn't get a Chubb. No big deal, most men his age have those problems but they do just fine

This is the answer. Plus, Spurrier gonna Spurrier. I know the fans wanted Chubb for sure though. His tape generated quite the fervor on our boards.

EDIT: frick, SOS, why weren't you there????

I sort of remember this, and it's happened a time or two w/ other recruits (him not being in town during visits).

I think we were all in on Derrell Scott. That didn't work out either and we didn't take a RB last class.

At the time of Chubb's visit he was a low 4* (maybe a 92 rating on 247, and below Scott), so fans didn't get too upset.

Gotcha. Thanks for the responses. I was just wondering how that ended up happening. Even if he was a 4*, it would make since for Spurrier to be in town for a priority RB target. However, if Derrell Scott was the main target at the position, I could see how that might happen.

Really liked Chubb's film. Wanted him at AU, he'll be a good one

Agreed. I think he will be a great compliment to Sony Michel. As far as AU is concerned; I imagine Jovon will soften the blow a bit.

Assuming we get him. I won't feel good until he's signed.

Good call. In this day and age with recruiting; I remain an eternal pessimist until ink is dry.

He was in Destin for the SEC spring meetings.

So frick Nick Chubb for being a dipshit and frick the AJC for neglecting to mention that

eta- and hes wrong about waiting a week.

According to 247sports Chubb visited USC on 4/20 (Spurrier's birthday, he ain't gonna be recruiting even if he was in Cola) and 5/31, when Spurrier was in Destin for the SEC spring meetings, which hes required to attend.

If he really had interest in USC he should have scheduled an official. Instead hes bitching and getting pissy over not getting the diva treatment

Or, he's telling the AJC's UGA fanbase exactly what we want to hear: that Spurrier is a POS and Carolina screwed the pooch on getting a good RB (how true or reasonable it is doesn't matter if it garners page clicks).

And Treyvon Paulk. At one point ESPN said we got the best overall RB recruiting unit in terms of total packages this cycle (not individually but as a RB group/unit) all three compliment one another. I'm sure that's all debatable but it's a great trio for us.

Yeah I think it's only bullshite....back during his recruitment, AJC reported that he grew up a UGA fan, but now they are trying to make out like he was a USC fan. He was a late addition to the recruiting process for us, and we had locked onto Havelock's Scott a year before the 2014 cycle began.

There was a little bit of back-and-forth late in the process, but I understand that the USC staff never got enough feedback from either Chubb or his HS coach that USC wouldn't ever be more than a honorable mention for him, so they recruited him, but didn't make him a total target...

Not much to it really. Every stone in this place is thrown from some pretty massive glass houses. (UGA's included)
