On the current roster Tyndall continues to rave about the athleticism and work ethic that incoming freshman Willie Carmichael has displayed. The buzz also continues to be very positive about junior college transfer Kevin Punter, who reportedly has displayed the kind of game you'd expect to see from a 20 point per game scorer.

Tennessee is one of four programs prominently in the mix to add plug-and-play guard Jon Octeus from Colorado State, multiple sources close to Octeus' recruitment told govols247 on Wednesday.
Octeus, a 6-foot-4 combo guard who will be eligible to play this season, averaged 13.4 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists last season.
According to both sources, Octeus is initially focusing on four programs ? Tennessee, UCLA, Baylor and Cincinnati.
One source told govols247 that Octeus would "almost certainly" start as Tennessee's point guard this season if he chose the Vols.
Tennessee has one spot available after senior center Rawane Ndiaye tore an ACL and was placed on a medical scholarship.

As for the 2015 class, it’s been a quieter week on that front, but we did pick up at least one interesting note: The Vols feel like they’re more in the mix with Memphis-area five-star power forward Skal Labissiere than most are acknowledging.

Now, to be clear, we still believe Labissiere has Memphis or Kentucky written all over him, but the Vols feel like they’ll at least get a spot at the final table there. And who knows what could happen at that point? It should go without saying at this point, but obviously Labissiere — the No. 8 overall prospect in the 2015 247Composite — is at or near the very top of Tennessee’s wish list, alongside players like Jawun Evans, Jaylen Brown, Kerry Blackshear, Dwayne Bacon, Jalen Adams and Malik Beasley.

Speaking of Bacon, the Vols seem to feel confident about that situation at the moment. Florida State is the runaway leader in Bacon’s Crystal Ball at nearly 80 percent, but the Vols have worked really hard and gotten the picture with him going into the big July evaluation period.

Here is a post from a guy who follows UT hoops recruiting extremely closely on another board

quote:

Here is in my estimation, a look at the big board (in order)

Heavy Tennessee Lean w/ Committable Offer
3* JUCO PG Dequon Miller

First Tier Targets
5* PG Jawun Evans (Evans will officially visit Tennessee; emerged as the #1 overall player on the board due to need at PG; exploded at NBPA Camp)
5* SF Dwayne Bacon (Tennessee coaches quietly feel they are the team to beat here going in to July)
4* SG Malik Beasley (Tennessee is on him hard, but most feel it will be tough to pull him out of GA)
4* F Chris Clarke (One of the first players identified by the staff, Clarke fits Tyndall's system perfectly; also exploded in Charlottesville; will be a tough pull)

2nd Tier Targets
4* PF Luke Maye (Tennessee is a real factor here; Tennessee will likely only take one post in the class and Maye may be in a position to take that spot if he wants it)
G Shembari Phillips (If Tennessee strikes out with Beasley, Phillips is a guy who could take his spot. Coaches will watch him in July, but his stock is steadily climbing)
PG Everson Davis (Not a take right now, but Tennessee desperately needs a HS PG in this class and they liked what they saw out of him in the spring)
3* C Tacko Fall (The tallest player in the class at 7'5, Fall is an interesting fit for Tyndall, who seems to prefer smaller and more athletic posts)

Long Shots who would have a spot if they wanted:
5* SF Jaylen Brown (Little to no chance, but Tennessee has done what they can)
4* C Skal Labissiere (Tennessee seems to be slowly creeping in to the picture here and could be in a position to receive an official, but signing him in the end would be a huge shock)

Sounds like we will land 5* 2016 F Braxton Blackwell. His best friend/teammate (Braxton Bonds) has decided to walk on this year, rather than take a scholly at Liberty.

Tyndall's really surprised me with his ability to recruit so far given the circumstances. He might not land some of the bigger fish he's after but he's out there hanging with the big names and getting exposure. It sounds like he's got a work ethic similar to Butch on the trail.

Link to Blackwell's profile for anyone interested

Going to try and bring some life back to this thread.

Volfan30, if you see this feel free to drop some info in here. You always bring good BB discussion and I know there are several of us on here who are enjoy talking basketball.

Today From Wes Rucker.

Another interesting note: Barnes said John Calipari pushed him as hard as anyone to take the Tennessee job. Cal told him Tennessee was a "great" place where he could win big.

FWIW, Barnes and Cal have been good friends since 1978. Adds an interesting subplot to the Vols-Cats rivalry, for sure.

Ben Fred this evening

Interesting: New Vols staff member Riley Davis played a year at Howard College in Big Spring, Texas. Same JuCo as PG prospect Rob Gray.

From a Q&A on RTI

quote:

Obviously, Rob Gray is a primary target. He’s visiting Memphis next weekend, so we’ll see what happens there.

Tyrone Taylor (currently committed to Wichita State) is another option at point guard, while guard Kobe Eubanksand forward Jalen Brown – probably long shots –  are two other guys to keep an eye on.

Another interesting player is Drexel guard Damion Lee, who will graduate this year with a year of eligibility remaining. He is looking to transfer to a place that will offer him immediate playing time under a coach who can help him develop his game….seems like a good fit, no? Here’s an excerpt from a recent SBNation article on Lee:

“Lee, a 6’6? small forward who averaged 21 points, six rebounds, two steals and two turnovers per game for the Drexel Dragons, is a dynamic forward with a lot of interest in his services. He also shot 38.5% from beyond the three-point line.”

Talked To Admiral Schofield

He spoke with coach Barnes tonight, says he is all in, will not he asking for a release. I have not talked to Phillips yet but Schofield indicated he was going to stick as well.Definitely consider that second-hand info for the time being though.

More from Rob Lewis on possible assistant coaches.

quote:

A name I'm hearing a lot of chatter about tonight as potentially joining Barnes' staff is Desmond Oliver.

He was most recently on staff at Charlotte. Prior to that he was on the staff at Georgia, and has a tie to Barnes through former UGA head coach Dennis Felton, who previously worked for Barnes.

Wouldn't pencil him in just yet but one to keep an eye on.

Asked about lanier

quote:

I think Lanier still in play, but still digging. Don't think that one is dead yet as far as him ending up here but not a done deal or anything.

Tennessee expected to hire Charlotte assistant Desmond Oliver.

Oliver coached grad. transfer Mike Thorne at Charlotte. Thorne is the best big man on the transfer market.

Wasn't Lanier supposed to be an all star recruiter while they were at Texas?
