my top five would be:
1. 1966 Vanderbilt
2. 1974 Alabama
3. 1972 Tennessee
4. 1977 Alabama
5. 1968 Vanderbilt
If a certain team was on probation or turned a bid down regardless of reason, said team doesn't get any consideration.

I agree. Would make no changes.

2003 UGA was the best we have probably, although they technically did "make" the tournament but were held out by our gutless, spineless administration.

1954 Kentucky. 25-0; Final AP poll rank of #1 and Rupp decided to not participate in NCAA tournament in protest. They should top the list. This was a year after the death penalty season.

Um,no. It shouldn't. I was certainly implied while not spelled out that if you were on probation or turned down a bid, this list wouldn't included said team.

1958-1959 Mississippi State 24-1 SEC Champs weren't allowed to go b/c of segregation laws in Mississippi at the time. Led by MSU great and future NBA all star Bailey Howell.
1961-1962 Mississippi State 24-1 SEC Champs weren't allowed to go b/c of segregation laws in Mississippi at the time

Which year? They played in it in 1975-1976 and 1976-1977?
That '74-'75 team would have made it today but they were hardly 'snubbed' or "the second best team in America" like 1971 Southern Cal or 1974 Maryland.

Al,again,if your school turned it down (regardless of reason) it doesn't count.

The school didn't the state refused to let them. If you ever get a chance look up the story on the 1963-1963 Mississippi State basketball team that snuck out of the state against the gov's wishes. The Univ Pres and coaches ALL WANTED to PLAY. The GOV and State govt refused.

I understand. State was like most other schools in the SEc. LSU turned down the 1961 NCAA baseball bid for the same reason. What the '62-'63 team did was remarkable and one of sports more underrated moments in "sportsmanship". And,they got some help from Vandy getting to Nashville to fly to East Lansing.
And,this is my thread so the others don't count.

Your thread is pointless and borders on stupidity then. The segregation and post death penalty teams all have far more historical impacts and all could have won the title!
