By June 4, 2014, they will have sold or given away nearly everything they own. Both Devry and Curtis and their two daughters, college student Mackenzie and Huntsville High School junior Cassidy, will board an airplane for Kenya with the remainder of their belongings tucked into suitcases that will weigh less than 50 pounds each. And even that will be 100 times more than the belongings of their new neighbors in Migori, Kenya, a small town in western Kenya.

quote:

At the end of the summer, Mackenzie will return to her studies in pre-physical therapy at the University of South Alabama. Devry, Curtis and Cassidy will stay in Migori, an area rife with malaria and typhoid, where they will have traded Alabama’s rattlers and copperheads for mambas and cobras, and where everything they’ve done before will seem like training for the best work they expect to ever have, working with clinic, school and orphanage founded by the independent, non-denominational, Cullman-based Kenya Relief.

They're from my hometown and live in a pretty wealthy neighborhood. It's a pretty interesting story.

The last guy in the news that went from Bama to Africa was seeking pure jihad. . This seems to have a much better desired end state.

That is a great story. I hope they are successful in their efforts to help the people where they are moving.

What a croc. Nothing more than a " look at me" move. If they were so concerned about helping people, why not those needy people here in the U. S. that could use it. Frick them.

“What’s exactly is our safety net?” Devry finally asked Curtis. Curtis, who still has a loping, boyish way about him, looked at her, shrugged and grinned. “Well,” he said, “Just God, I guess.”

Solid foresight.

Sick children absolutely break my heart more than anything else in this world, but this whole plan is absurd.

LOL what?

The needy in the US are living the high life compared to the needy in Africa.

Its kinda fricked up that they would do that to their children. They are taking them from their family and friends to force them to into poverty. At least wait til your kids are grown.
