In 1954, the NCAA implemented a rule that a team could only make a single substitution between plays. This effectively ended the two-platoon system that had arisen after WW2. It would be another 10 years before the NCAA revoked the '54 rule change.
Interesting. Was Neyland the Nick Saban of his day?
(Honorable mention: Johnny Vaught for outlawing the "tackle eligible" play. It seems like outlawing innovation has been the go-to strategy for coaches past their prime.)

In 1954, the NCAA emplaced a set of new rules requiring the use of the one-platoon system, primarily due to financial reasons. The system allowed only one player to be substituted between plays, which effectively put an end to the use of separate specialized units. Tennessee head coach "General" Robert Neyland praised the change as the end of "chickenshit football".

Personally, I want the one platoon system back.

You bumped your own subtle flame thread. That no one else had posted in. Congrats.

Robert Neyland was a badass motherfricker.

This thread was artfully crafted to flame UT, Bama, and Ole Miss. I wasn't going to let it just wither and die.

He last coached in 1952.

If he thought having distinct offensive, defensive, and special teams was "chickenshit," can you imagine what his opinion of today's game would be?

I'm gonna side with Neyland on this one.
There's something awesome about "iron man" football where players used to play both sides.
Limited substituions are not rare in sports.
Football has evolved into a game of specialists, which is interesting too.
Limited substitutions would indeed be make the game more hardcore.

Let's get rid of the system of downs and the forward pass.

Change is not inherently good or bad, it's just change.
The game evolves for sure, but not every evolution is necessarily for the better.
Thinking one particular aspet of it has changed for the worst isn't the same thing as DUH LET'S GO BACK TO LEATHER HELMET RULES!

In the days when teams could tie, who got the bowl trophy in the event of a tie?

Frickin'eh he was.
One of the greatest coaches to ever coach the college game and definitely the third best in the history of the SEC.

And to think what he might have accomplished if he hadn't missed six years due to military service.
I would not mess with this epic badass of a man. Praise Neyland!

Pretty sure Bear never beat him and Bryant always admitted how good Neyland was.

Bear sucked against good coaches. Never beat Notre Dame, Neyland or Royal.
