10 Second Proposal and Future Scheduling

quote:

Slive also touched on future football scheduling in 2016 and beyond. Figuring out whether the league will stick with an eight-game conference schedule or move to a nine-game slate, along with keeping or demolishing permanent cross-divisional rivalries, will be decided prior to the SEC’s spring meetings in late May.

Slive also said no conference rivalry was sacred, according to the Ledger-Enquirer.

“Last spring in Destin (Fla.), our presidents said to us, ‘Study the formats and we want a decision in time for the 2016 season,’ which is now,” Slive said. “So we’ve been working on that since then.

“We tell them that all of the formats — every one of them — has a series of advantages and disadvantages,” he said. “There’s no one that lines up with all advantages and there’s no one that lines up with all disadvantages. So people are going to have to make a decision knowing that whatever decision they make is going to have some advantages and some disadvantages.”

The SEC’s sacred rivalries of Auburn-Georgia and Alabama-Tennessee sound like they’re in jeopardy.

Interesting. But I don't think the two main cross-division rivalries are going anywhere.

How can they take away our sacred rivalry with Kentucky? This is outlandish!

For those that followed the A&M/Mizzou invite, remember that TSIO and DSOR were assured to get those 4 needed votes. If this quote is accurate I suppose it's just a reflection of the mercantile state of CFB. One possibility is that this is Slives way of forcing a 9 game conference slate, which I think it may well do.

The permanent rivalries will stay if we get 9 games.

That's what I'm thinking. He said the decision will be now so 8 game slate with a 6-2 or 9 game slate with a 6-1-2 maybe?

Politics is a dirty business.

If we get 9 games, I feel they should still be dropped. It should be even across the board. Why jeopardize that?

...and in fairness to UF and SCar they are the ones getting hosed.

You have to get a majority...so if the majority wants to keep 6-1-1, it will stay like that, even if Slive would like to see a 6-1-2 format.

It think it's still even enough with permanent. It's just one game.

That's the sort of thing that could tear the conference apart

Here's an article that goes into more depth on the scheduling vote: LINK

quote:

There are four main options being discussed. “We're looking at eight games with or without permanents, nine games with or without permanents and maybe one off-shoot of that, ” Slive said while speaking to reporters during The Associated Press Sports Editors' Southeast Regional meeting Monday afternoon.

Slive said all 14 schools in the conference have been shown the different options.

“Of all the formats, everyone has a series of advantages and disadvantages,” Slive said. “So people are going to have to make a decision knowing that whatever decision they make, they're going to have some advantages and disadvantages.”

Should come down to an interesting vote. I wonder if they will release the votes publically, or will they vote on it before the meetings and have a pre-planned unanimous vote at the meetings for the public?

I'm thinking the offshoot would allow the teams that want to keep their cross-division rivalries in tact to play yearly and let all others that do not to rotate. Just a guess though

I realize that but remember that the coaches vote as a representative of the President/Chancellor.

The B1G is doing something like. Indiana/Purdue is the only permanent cross-divisional series in the conference.
