France passes new law classification - "living beings capable of feelings"

Pet owners will be able to claim damages for the suffering they incur if their animal is killed. Before the amendment, they were only entitled to compensation for the cost of the animal.
The law is also expected to facilitate judicial decisions in divorce cases concerning the custody of a couple's pets. Judges will assess if a pet has stronger feelings towards one party over another.
Critics have warned that the bill threatens farming, hunting and scientific research and said it could open the door for animal activists to take legal action against those who kill "beings with feelings".

Chances something like this is introduced here in the next 5 years? I think pretty good chances, the way things are going.

This would be a nightmare.

How do we define which animals qualify for this and which dont?
Obviously dogs are capable of a wide range of emotions and possess a childlike sense of right and wrong, but what about hermit crabs? Gerbils? Snakes?

If you've ever been to France, you've seen how they love their pets, especially dogs. It changed the way I feel about the French in general, for the better.
I would support such a law for dogs. Their importance in our lives is just too great to be treated as mere possessions.

Say goodbye to affordable veterinary care for your dog then.

Curious to see how that works out for them. I wonder if this new classification would eventually turn into an argument against pet ownership as a form of slavery.

Obamacare for pets.
Don't even laugh.

In March:
1. Sparky broke a toe - $140.00
2. Jacky had a UTI - $430.00
3. Teeth cleanings for both - $574.00
These two Rat Terriers are 10 and 13 years old respectively. I estimate I've spent $10,000+ on each of them to this point, just for maintenance and mishaps. Veterinary care is already through the roof if you maintain your dog's health at the level of your other family members.

Pigs are smarter than dogs. How do they plan on getting their pork?

It's not through the roof by any means, you just don't have insurance to cover the majority of expenses.
Veterinary care is very affordable, but it won't be if people can start suing for damages.
You think it's expensive to pay $574 for two teeth cleanings for senior dogs? It's not. Small dogs typically have horrible teeth due to the teeth being crammed into a small space. The vet has to put them under anesthesia, and if you waited to have the first cleaning done when they were older, the problems are usually worse.

I will never understand pet people. I just don't get it.
You have most likely eaten animals today. You are wearing animals on your body right now in the form of leather shoes, boots, etc.
I just don't get how some people become so incredibly attached to animals. I can see how children do, but not adults.

That's my point. If I could add them to my health insurance plan, I would.
Humans have bred dogs to be our emotional companions, security personnel, soldiers, farm workers, etc. They fit into almost every aspect of our lives.
We owe them the dignity of the positions where we place them in our society. The French have taken an important step in that direction.

I don't know enough about you to have an opinion of your feelings about dogs but I do know other people with similar attitudes. I'll only discuss dogs because they're the only species that I think humans have elevated above the status of pets.
No other species, including cats, have been as assimilated into our everyday lives. Dogs are pseudo-humans in the responsibilities that we give them.
Maybe you weren't raised with them or, if you're like my Dad, you think they're just work animals. It's obvious to me that dogs have earned a special place in our lives where they should be treated with the special care and respect that they deserve.

You've got to be trolling.

I never troll. I do sometimes go to extremes, though.
I was once part of a group that would steal dogs from abusive owners and then relocate them to supportive families. That's how strongly I feel about canines.

Serious question...have you ever owned a dog as an adult?
