Brought up the idea before, but what do you guys think about a Redzone Back?

My idea was basically inside the redzone, Fowler is the tailback. Reasons?

1. Easy Rushing scores happen in the RZ that can inflate a back's numbers and create the wrong perception of their ability to score.

2. Fowler has been loyal to Bama and deserves the easy TDs more than anyone.

3. He's proven himself as a capable enough runner and pass catcher to be trusted within 20 yards.

What does this really do though?

It makes Yeldon/Henry/Drake HUNGRIER. When they know their stats aren't gonna be inflated with gimme TDs, they'll be hungrier before the redzone. They'll do everything to finish runs hard and try and bust longer ones so they can score without letting Jalston into the game.

And if we go with a Fullback, now Corey McCarron has proven to be a capable FB like Fowler, so if you use Fowler at RB, just put CM at FB.

I would like to see Fowler play more and also to get more touches. Definitely a red zone type of back. No need for the DL gimmick with a Fowler on the roster. He can carry, blow open a hole or catch the swing pass. The total FB or HB with enough TB qualities to make him a serious threat to defenses.

I think it reminds me of the Shula years.

Nothing ticks me off more than seeing one back doing all the work to get the offense in scoring position, then seeing some other back put in to get the TD. I remember when Lacy had some great runs on a drive against Penn State in 2011 and they brought Trent in at the 1 yard line for the points.

That said, give the ball to the guy who has the best chance to get points.

That was something I noticed Kiffin doing in the Spring Game. We actually were using a full back instead of only single back formations.

Same thing happened to Fowler in Mich game, Yeldon brought in for the easy TD after Fowler did all the work.

Last year, I think we really under-utilized Fowler. Maybe he wasn't 100% recovered from the knee injury. Whatever the case was, we really missed that bruising back that could get 1-3 yards up the gut.

Maybe we'll get pre-injury Fowler back this year. That said, I think the PA pass to him on the goal line has kind of run it's course.

We need to find another 300lb+ guy that we can use as the blocker like we did with Cody and Jesse

I hate getting subbed out in road to glory when I've taken the team to the red zone, and that's a game. Reward the players that got you there.

It hasn't run its course until somebody stops it.
