-Tennessee spent Tuesday and Wednesday reaching out to coaches through intermediaries and figuring out the financial side of the search

-By Thursday Tennessee had reached out to Tad Boyle, Richard Pitino, Mike White, Tim Miles, Archie Miller, Chris Mack and Donnie Tyndall. Doesn't seem any other coaches have been contacted and it seems extremely likely Tennessee's next coach will come from that pool.

-Miles, Mack and Pitino seem to be the three coaches Tennessee favor most of that group.

-Boyle is the longest shot of that group, as he is looking for a salary north of $2 million.

-Interviews could begin as early as tomorrow with those candidates.

-There does not seem to be a lot of interest on Tennessee's end in either Ben Howland or Tubby Smith, who both reached out to Tennessee early on. There are real concerns about Howland's past issues with discipline and compliance.

-Gregg Marshall does not seem to be in play. Feelers suggest he would be looking for a salary in the high $2 million range.

Just let your women's coach do double duty.

Tim Miles is easily the best coach of that group.

I do not want Pitino. He is probably my least favorite of all the candidates mentioned.

Pitino would be awful, his Minnesota team was so unimpressive. Arky beat that arse by 15 in Maui.

He won the NIT in his first year, hardly an awful hire.

Carried by all of Tubby's players that actually made the tournament the year before

I think Ricky Jr. has a high ceiling, but he's not very proven.

Also, thought this was interesting from VQ.

One thing we've heard consistently from everyone we've spoken to in regards to what the successful candidate will bring to the table is an exhibited proficiency in recruiting. That's been a repetitive message from the administration and frankly looks to be the first and biggest priority in many ways. If other words if you are interviewing for this job. Your recruiting plan better be good and it better be extensive.

Will be very important, especially since Cuonzo is leaving whoever we hire with a pile of shite (outside of possibly the Hubbs/Thompson/Davis class and Richardson)

What I like about Jr. is that his name alone opens doors in recruiting. He also has the connections to get marquee opponents on the schedule and has the potential to make our rivalries more fun.

Otherwise, he's certainly unproven.

I doubt Marshall would want to come here. If he did and Tennessee passes because they want to pay less than two million, they can just go ahead and shut the program down now.

Y'all would have to pay him more than you are paying Butch. Thats not happening at Tennessee.

I guess it's a good thing Butch is already overpaid.

So Tennessee is kind of serious about getting a good coach, but not 2 mil serious? You get what you pay for mostly.

Agreed. And if we aren't willing to pay more, why run off Martin?

They're willing to spend 2 mil on the right coach from what I understand.

Or in the 1.7/8+ range to begin with and then talks of raises/extensions based on performance going forward.

Why not just keep Martin then? They obviously just don't care all that much. If the right coach costs more than two million and you're not willing to pay that, you're just settling.
