-Former UCLA coach Ben Howland and Texas Tech coach Tubby Smith contacted Tennessee today to let them know of their interest in the Tennessee opening. There are some concerns with both on the UT end, but Tennessee seems to be more interested in Howland than Smith at this point in time. If Howland is able to bring Korey McCray (currently at LSU) he would become much more attractive, as the ability to recruit Atlanta is very important to Tennessee.

-Both Louisiana Tech's Mike White and Southern Miss's Donnie Tyndall have been contacted by Tennessee. Both indicated they would have interest in the job. Neither situation has progressed to an interview or offer.

-Xavier coach Chris Mack received an 8 year/$16M offer from Tennessee in 2011, but declined the offer due to possible NCAA sanctions related to Bruce Pearl. Tennessee could have interest again this go around, and Mack is very interested in Tennessee this time in part because Xavier also recently had some changes at the administrative level that concern him. Not clear if any official contact has been made yet.

-Tennessee has not made a call to Gregg Marshall today. Marshall would command $2.5 million at the very least and there's some doubt Tennessee would be willing to go that high. $2 million+ could be in play for Mick Cronin at Cincinnati, Chris Mack at Xavier or Howland, but anyone else would likely be paid between $1 and $2 million.

Does not sound like Tubby is a factor at all.

Also, I have never bitched about style of play. I don't care if the coach runs 30 seconds off the clock each possession if he wins. I do believe Howland is a much better coach than Cuonzo.

Howland at Tennessee (especially with McCray) would be much better than Pearl at Auburn.

White and Tyndall would be decent hires, but obviously neither are as proven as Pearl.

He won the Pac 12 his final season at UCLA and made the tournament with ease. Cuonzo has never made any tournament with ease. He was 16-11 with a team that was ranked in the KenPom top 10.

Anyone who thinks Cuonzo is a better coach than Howland is an absolute troll.

Meh, he lost control of the program which led to a high attrition rate which led to him losing the players we needed and it was his time to go. People forget when he came to UCLA, we were coming off our first losing season in 50+ years. He turned it around and did some good things. He can still coach, just not at a big time program

You just have to understand what you're getting with him. Its mind numingly boring basketball, but it gets the job done

You're one dumb mother fricker Frank Martin and Mike Anderson both have as much success as Pearl and both are at better programs.

Being what?

I can see some potential issues but we aren't gonna get coach k or as VF suggested yesterday spolstra ( )

Which realistic option would you rather have than Howland? I don't think we will pay for Mack nor do I think Marshall wants it

I think Howland would win, but his last six years at UCLA weren't exactly setting the world on fire, and there were obvious issues within the program. I'm just not sure we want to deal with what that would bring.

It was boring because it was losing ball and not well executed. During the tourney his style was plenty exciting because we saw it run with passion and good execution for once BUT the problem with CCM wasn't just that he had a boring style - HE was boring and to make matters worse just didn't connect with fans or even attempt selling the program. He had no interest in doing so - at least none that he showed to the general public despite (his personality was stoic and he had no intention of changing or making an effort to reach out regular Joe Schmoe which is necessary in college hoops) being universally regarded among the community and fanbase as a great human being. However, his charisma was -10 topping -100 at times except in the tourney. Other coaches accused of being boring would be hard pressed to reach the anti-charisma level Martin reached regularly. And I say that as someone who supported Martin and thought that he had potential to develop into a great, maybe even elite, coach here with time.

If a coach is boring and has given you no reason to believe he can turn it around that's a deadly combination - winning coaches and more proven ones are given more leeway to be boring. That's just fans for you, not a damn thing unique to us.
