Sophomore Lauren Beers collected the Crimson Tide's fifth consecutive Elite 89 award, which goes to the athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average at the final site of each of the NCAA's 89 championships. Since the award came into existence in 2010, Alabama's been the only team represented in gymnastics. Major congrats to Lauren, but I think the most impressive scholar on the gymnastics team is Ria Domier. I know both of them personally (go to church with Lauren and Ria has been working in my lab group), but Ria has had a 4.0 in chemical engineering, is a Goldwater scholar, getting her undergrad and masters degree in 4 years, and has won an NSF research grant award as she starts her Ph.D. studies at NC State.
Not complaining about one of our girls winning it, just wanted to give a bit of recognition where it's deserved.

I wonder if playing time is a factor? All five previous winners have been All-Americans and I think Ria has just done a few exhibitions. Domier's academic career is very impressive and will probably go somewhere super prestigious for grad school after Bama..... but it would be at least an explanation.
