Obviously down to Hill vs. Allen now. Anyone want to call your shot?

COLLEGE STATION-- Texas A&M graduate and Aggie quarterback Matt Joeckel will take advantage of an NCAA transfer rule to pursue his final year of athletic eligibility at another institution.

"Matt is a great Aggie and he has decided to transfer," Aggie head football coach Kevin Sumlin said. "We wish him all the best."

Joeckel earned his undergraduate degree from the Mays Business School at Texas A&M in December.

"I have loved my four and a half years at Texas A&M," Joeckel said. "I am glad I had the opportunity to play for Coach Sumlin, Coach (Jake) Spavital and the rest of the coaches. I am proud to have my degree from the Mays Business School and I'll always consider myself a member of the Aggie family."

To me the real question is:

What is going on with primadonna QBs in the state of Texas? It seems the second someone doesn't win the QB competition they take off.

I thought Allen was the flight risk, not Joeckel. Thought Joeckel pretty much knew at this point he wasn't going to start and was cool with it like hundreds of QBs are each year in college football.

And it is not just our problem, look at Texas's QB depth chart. A few guys would have been smart riding that out instead of transferring, and now they have hurt Ash as their QB. Or look at Tech's QB issues.

At this point I would get really excited about a three star non-Texas QB yessir just so I could feel like maybe that position could have some depth at some point.

I wouldn't call Matt a prima donna. He graduated already. He's done everything asked of him and he's not going to play football beyond this year and knows it.

It's the last chance he'll ever have. And I think he's not pursuing his graduate degree of choice at A&M and was only doing it because he loves A&M and he was in it for the starting job. Some are already speculating he winds up at SMU which is where I believe his father got his JD.

The Joeckels are a first class family. They've both always taken time for the fans and enjoyed the hell out of A&M. This is probably the hardest decision Matt has made in his entire life. It sucks for our depth, but Matt deserves our support because he's a fricking damn fine Ag.

But to answer your question, I'm pulling for Kyle Allen. Recruit Kyler, redshirt him the first year, let Kyle run the team a few years, then hand it over to Kyler when Allen goes pro

I don't think it's being a prima donna to want to play. At just about every other position, with the possible exception of the OL, players can expect to get meaningful snaps in games as part of a rotation. That doesn't happen w/ QBs. At least, not unless you've got a bad situation on your hands. If Joeckel had been told he was passed not only by Hill, but by Allen as well, then I totally understand his desire to transfer.

I mean, he's a 5th year senior who's already graduated. It isn't like this is the first time he's lost the QB job. He's already stuck around for years as a backup. I agree that it leaves us with some depth concerns at QB, but I wish him the best.

Yeah sorry, my bad. I know Matt is a good guy, and I meant everything I posted on tRant that I wish him luck and that he makes it to the NFL or at least has a good final year playing ball.

With that said, what IS going on in the State of Texas?

Matt Davis, Jameill Showers, Michael Brewer, Baker Mayfield, Clayton Nicholas, Connor Brewer, Connor Wood, Garrett Gilbert, etc.

The last few years, the top programs in the state can't keep a QB!

The state is flush with QB talent. Too many good QBs with only 11 D1 starting jobs available.

With only 11 jobs, and of those 11 only 6 or so have produced NFL QBs in the last few years, you would think if you are in line for one you would wait it out and see if you got your shot.

Matt obviously did that so this doesn't apply to him as much as the rest. But Showers might be starting for a SEC program next year if he stayed. Any of those Texas QBs would have started over Case if they had stayed.

Is starting for SMU or Sam Houston any more of a safe bet then waiting to see if the guy in front of you gets hurt? I guess when GG gets drafted it will be proven that might be the case....

Sorry to reply to my own post, but after some research I found this Feburary article that points out it is a national problem and not just in Texas:

I hope we can find a way to take 2 QBs in a coming up class.

Kenny Hill all the way. Kyle doesn't redshirt, backs him up, next season either Hill departs or we have another QB battle.

Kyler from there on out if he commits to the good guys.

Matt Joeckle is 100% class and I hate to see him go but I can understand where he's coming from. *sigh*

Graduate transfers are pretty common. Russell Wilson and Jeremiah masoli are te first to come to mind for me. I hope he kills it. QBU helping the needy.
