How Do You Feel About the Defense?

Before Spring practice and all of the injuries I was excited. Year 2 of Carl and Monty, Moncreif, a lot of guys returning with experience in the defensive scheme, ect, ect - then the injuries happened and I realized how precarious we were at several spots.
Hearing Ellis Johnson saying there hasn't been a full scrimmage in two weeks and that the Spring hasn't been very physical was eye opening. It's too early for panic mode but I am concerned heading into summer. I was really looking forward to us not being a, "bend but don't break" defense though and with the schedule we're facing this fall it probably won't be good enough
IMO Defense cost us an NC. We have to step it up on that side of the ball if we want to make it back.

We should have an improved defense overall, and that should give us a solid shot at making it back to the title game if the offense lives up to expectations. We are still another solid defensive class away from having a good defense I'd say.
Much depends on McKinzey and Frost though, if those manage to have the lights turn on and become good LB then our defense could be solid this year. We are very thin at LB and DE though, so we will need good health there to be successful.

I agree
One comment that EJ made was "we may not be as deep on the D–line but we will have more talent"... Kind of got me excited. When you look at the comments he's made through spring practice (incoming class, understanding the system, existing talent), I believe he's expecting a much better performance this upcoming season. The players seem to be very excited, I know I am.
Everybody will have plenty of time to heal from injuries. We have a lot of * on this defense and I think it's going to show big time.

We knew the capabilities of the departing players on defense. I look forward to seeing what the new group of guys are capable of, because being atrocious on D is getting tiresome.

We better be a lot fricking better. I expect we will but will be skeptical until I see it.
Dline will be stout. One of the best in the league.
Secondary will be slightly improved but still pretty average unless a true freshman goes berserk and balls out.
Linebacker will still be the question. It will be better than last year but that isn't saying much. At all.

Yeah. With Malzahn's offense I don't think it's possible for us to have a shutdown Defense but I would like for us to be decent-good. That's it. I didn't comment in the thread about the 2003-2008 defenses but what I would have said is that you would have to take the 9-6, 2-3 offense that went with them an no one wants that. I think we all just want a nice balance.

What sucks is that these are the areas we've had the most injuries. It's like Defense Jesus hates us

This is what concerns me the most, the sheer amount of key guys that we have banged up right now. As I noted in the OP our schedule this year is brutal so lingering injuries can really bite us on the arse down the line.
As noted above, having another recruiting class will not only give us the talent it will give us the depth we desperately need.

As long as Gus is our HC we should have a 20 offense so I'm hoping we can break the top 40 on D this year. Build on our success in the red zone D last year.

We should be stout on the Dline and solid at LB. The secondary concerns me. I don't believe Whitehead is a top talent at Safety

I was of the opinion at the beginning that we would be seeing freshman on the field for at least three years assuming that they were capable. That seems to be holding true, besides, Gus has shown that he's not afraid to put a true freshman in.
From what I have seen, I have incredible faith in this coaching staff's ability to recruit talent. If I'm not mistaken all the incoming DB's are four-star athletes except for the JC player from California (he has blinding speed on a big body). Coupled with what we have now, including Rudy Ford and Trovon Reed who have shown that they are more than capable, we could be looking at a much improved secondary as the season wears on (Kansas St. real will be a test).
At linebacker, No Jake Holland!..... that says a lot..... seriously. Tre Williams as a true freshman is a huge improvement, not to mention Andrew Williams on the DL as another example.
This #6 recruiting class is a pretty big deal for me. I think a lot of these guys will make an immediate impact as we move through the season. But I could also be full of bull-shite.

Holland is definently addition by subtraction
And we have a lot to look forward to this summer. That pic of Lawson and Williams that was going around earlier was legit. Hopefully they can fill in the gaps. One thing to our advantage on D this year is that majority of the teams we face will be starting new QB's. LSU, A&M, UGA, Bama will all have 1st year QB's when we face them so hopefully we can create some key mistakes to close out some games

Getting Holsey and Garrett back makes me very excited.
I think it'll be a better unit overall. Probably not great but maybe above average.

All this injury crap on D this spring is really pissing me off tbh. I think it will bite us in the arse. Spring is when the defense really takes a big step forward because spring is all about hitting and tackling and technique and some more hitting and a lot more tackling.
Johnson says spring has not been physical enough. That bothers me and makes me angry because we aren't good enough on D and need to get better.
The D better be healthy and have it's arse in high gear when fall practice starts.

How about Special Teams? 17 point swing in special teams miscues? Just want to casually glance over that fact?
ETA: BTW, the defense held FSU to 23 points LESS than their average on the season (27 points, 50 ppg on the season). The defense held them to 144 yards less than FSU averaged on the season.
FSU scored 54% of their game average against Auburn's defense.
FSU got 73% of their game yardage average against Auburn's defense.
The defense did plenty to win that game.
