Dobbs looked great today and improved his arm strength considerably from the end of the season until now. He went 6 for 9 for 199 yards and a 60 yard rushing touch down and was zinging it on every pass. He Looked much more improved from last year which was fun to watch.

Worley looked really good as well today from a game manager stand point and you could tell he felt the most comfortable running the offense. But he lacks the athleticism that Ferg and Dobbs have

Ferg was hit or miss with a great scoring drive and 2 meh series that I was able to see. Held on to the ball to much at times but put some serious heat on his throws. Showed flashes at times but looked bad at times. Inconsistent is probably the best way to describe his performance today.

Peterman looked like Peterman

WR and TE looked really good as a whole.

Malone balled out with 6 catches for 181 yards and 3 TD s. The biggest play of the day was a 79 yard bomb from Dobbs to Malone to end the 3rd quarter.

North with 105+ yards including a huge 50 yard bomb, Croom, Pearson, Johnson, Smith, and Young all made big time catches and did well with yards after contact. Last years WR Corp isn't from the same stratosphere as this years guys.

TE position looked a lot better as well with Ellis and more specifically Wolf making some big plays. Both freshmen TEs wolf and Helm have added quite a bit of muscle and look a lot different from a physique stand point then when they got on campus.

Lane, young, and Hurd all looked good at times and just OK at times. Hurd broke a few big time tackles for tough YAC and rushed for 66 yards on 11 carries. He brings another skill set with how big and physical he is. Wouldn't be surprised if he gets serious attention going forward as the #1 back. He's positioning himself very well.

OL help up better than I thought they would but did struggle at times with pass protection and then looked pretty good at times. All but 1 OL guy beat their DL opp. In the circle of life IIRC.

Play calling was hard to watch at times. Really Vanilla (I understand it was the Spring Game). I'm not hating on it, merely pointing it out. They ran a lot of screens and short passes but didn't stretch the field as much as you would hope. Granted the few times they aired it out, the results were what you would hope for. Worley, Dobbs, and Ferguson(at times) all did a much better job at throwing open their receivers than last year.

Worley still not keeping it on the Zone Read for the most part, although he did have a big 49 yard run down to the 2 yard line on one of the two he did keep.

QB competition still looks wide open, but that's not a negative comment. In fact you might be able to argue the exact opposite.

Curious to your guys thoughts. Go Vols

Figured I'd give you a break from all the good threads/info you've brought lately.

I just watched the highlights from the scrimmage. Josh Malone is a fricking boss. Dobbs looked VERY good. And I loved that run by Hurd where he stiff armed one guy into the ground then bowled over the next guy to gain a few more yards. Vols haven't had a back that runs like that since probably Hardesty.

The defense looks like a little bit of a clusterfrick but we have a ton of defensive recruits coming in the summer that will be in the 2deep immediately so we will see how that goes.

from my understanding dobbs was playing against the 2nd team defense is why he looked so good, is this correct?

That's incorrect. He went up against both 1s and 2s through out the course of the game.

Peterman is the only QB I saw that only went with the 2s

Hurd definitely has that mean streak in him. He was running, searching out contact, not shying away from it or trying to bounce it outside on every play like Neal did prior to his senior campaign. He picks up the tough yards after contact like you would hope to see.

IMO if he can stay healthy he's going to be a game changer for us.

I think the hype is for real boys,, not with just Hurd and Malone but the freshmen class in general.

good to hear. Because from all i read dobbs did all his work against 2nd team defense while fergs and worley split with first team.

Very hard for me to get real read on how good we will be considering the 1's on offense rarely went against the 1's on defense. For instance, when the WRs burned someone and got open, it was more than likely a second or third string DB. North's TD against Sutton was the only 1 v 1 TD that I saw.

When the offensive 1's went against the 1's on defense at the beginning (with Worley, the presumed starter) it resulted in a FG.

Just think it's hard to gauge anything when our best guys are playing against backups on the other end and vice versa. For instance, the defense sacked Ferguson a few times but Ferguson was also behind the 2nd team line going against the 1st team DL.

I agree with you. The things that I was happy to see were the intangibles both Dobbs and Worley put on display. Both looked like their arm strength has improved but Dobbs was putting more zip on his passes and his accuracy was spot on, regardless of who was on defense. While Worley just looked cool calm and collective and really ran the offense well. The only thing about Worley is it eats me up that he rarely keeps it on the zone read. IMO it makes him 1 dimensional(in this offense). I don't think he needs to hold on to it a lot more, but it would be nice to see him keep it with more frequency and keeping the D more honest.

That being said I think we're sitting a lot better at QB than I thought we would be by this point. I feel confident both Worley and Dobbs could start and both fergy and Peterman would make better backups than at any point last year.

I'm just hoping for all of us they continue to develop and evolve as players. It was only a spring game but it was nice to see those guys be successful.

If Worley had a 50 yards run against the first team defense, we are screwed.

It should have been about a 20 yard gain but McNeil or Coleman IIRC took a shitty angle and gave up another 30.

Yikes

I think Kelly Jr may start game 1 at SS. McNeil is just god awful anytime he tried to catch someone in space. He's slow as hell, doesn't wrap up and takes horrible angles.

Eta- I just watched the clip again. It was in fact McNeil that took got smoked by Worley

How are the OL and DL coming together?

OL is going to be better than many people think. I doubt we will run many deep routes to take the strain off the OL. They pass protected well in the O&W game, and I think they will be better at run blocking compared to last year's guys.

However, our DL is where I am worried. Maggitt at DE will help but until we get Saulsberry back from injury we are very thin on that end of the ball.

Looking back on it, I'm mistaken. Dobbs was purely with the 2s.

Sorry about that

Maggit got moved to DE? I've been out of my Vol loop then.

And I don't think your O will need to throw it deep to often. Just enough to keep people honest.

He's been bouncing back and forth from LB to DE to give an added threat on the line on passing plays IIRC.

It's been huge getting him back. Physically and mentally. Him and A.J are the rocks on D, probably even more so with missing last year with the ACL tear

that is what i had read all day sat, i wasnt there so wasnt going to argue

but anyway, there is a huge drop in talent from the 1s and 2s so its not fair to give dobbs the props when he was running with the 2s

Regarding the 2s - there's been one source that's claimed that and a hoarding of the tape by UT so no one really knows. However, looking at the drive charts and comparing to that source's list it doesn't add up (for example Blanc is listed as being with the 1s when you compare that sources breakdown with the official drive chart but he's not the only one by any means). The 1s/2s were so mixed in with players that I don't think we saw a true 1 or 2 team.
