I need another bad habit. I like Scotch but am unsure how to best proceed.

Now what?

Glenlivet 12. It's good and fairly inexpensive.

Trust me.

Drink it neat.

I drink one light glass of scotch each night after the kids go to sleep. Mizzeaux is correct: GL12 is very good especially for the price.

If you want to indulge in something smooth with a lot of character, go with McClelland or Laphroaig for a campfire experience.

However, if you want the best thing on a budget, Dewars White Label is very underrated. Incredibly smooth and enjoyable.

Here's my recipe for evening scotch:

1/2 shot of scotch
1 shot of water
Couple of ice cubes

Very light. Very enjoyable to sip and relax.

Good luck

I have a bottle of Famous Grouse I sip now and again but if you want a "smooth" experience the simple answer is bourbon, LINK stay thirsty my friends.

Honestly, if you want something far more enjoyable than scotch, you'll buy a bottle of Old Overholt Rye Whisky and mix with ginger ale.

1 shot rye
3 shots ginger ale
2 ice cubes

A true rye whisky is far better than scotch. Actually, rye is America's drink. Our founding fathers distilled it and it remained America's number one whisky until Prohibition.

Prohibition nearly made rye whisky go extinct. In the past 15 years, rye has made a strong resurgence.

Many experts consider rye whisky far superior to traditional scotch, and in my opinion they are right.

Kills my friend you sound like an experienced "drinker" such as myself. While the better distillery's go to great lengths to ensure quality control in single barrels, a blended bourbon like Beam Black label or scotch like Johnny Black will, due to the blending process, yield a more consistent result, sometimes FAR more consistent.

While taste varies, and sometimes greatly, and I don't presume to tell anyone what they should like or not like, the difference between "smooth" and what a lot of single malt scotchs are, especially those that attempt to utilize peat characteristics, is a massive gulf.

On that note, try some WhistlePig if you haven't already.

Will do.

Point I'm trying to make to casual drinkers is that while some scotches are indeed fantastic, there are even better whiskies on the market at far better deals.

People with little knowledge of whisky (or whiskey) believe scotch is the best simply because it has a stellar but incredibly overrated reputation

Since I started drinking decent Scotch I haven't been able to drink it anything but neat.

If someone throws me a glass of J&B I'll throw some ice in it to cool it and mellow it out a bit, but when it comes to decent/good Scotch (or any good brown liquor for that matter) I can't see throwing some water and ice in it.

To the question; Will you generally add rocks or water in a Scotch regardless of quality?

Also, good call on the Rye. There are few mixed drinks better than an Old Fashioned.

To answer you scotch question, yes I'll add at least equal water because I like a subtle quiet scotch. Regardless if I'm drinking McClelland, GL, Laphraoig, or White Label...I like to mellow the scotch. I was taught that equal parts water allows an individual to discover nuances hidden within the scotch.

Give it a swirl and then lightly sip and allow it to dance in your mouth, sort of like wine.

Wow...that sounded gay

Find a higher end whiskey bar and have the bartender bring you different types. There's a place simply called "Whiskey Bar" in Denver that is the local Mizzou joint - they typically have a few limited run private label types on hand that they'll share if you ask.
