A German furniture store has pulled 5,000 mugs from sale - after realizing they featured a portrait of Adolf Hitler.

Blundering buyers for the Zurbrüggen chain failed to spot the Nazi leader's scowling face on a pale 1930s postage stamp print when ordering in the china.

The Bielefeld branch had already sold 175 of the tankards when a worker noticed the Fuhrer - and a Swastika.

An investigation was launched - and it emerged that the image was included by a designer in China unaware of who Hitler was.

Chain owner Christian Zurbrüggen said the discovery was "dreadful" and down to "a pretty stupid series of unfortunate events," reports The Local.

"Nobody noticed anything when they were unpacking and sorting," he added.

Zurbrüggen has stopped selling the mugs and said anyone who returns one will be given a €20 voucher as an apology.

The mugs may still get to live on, however, with Neue Westfälische reporting that they could now go on display at the Haus der Geschichte museum in Bonn.

A spokesman told the newspaper that they "showed the complications of a globalized world."
