Why are men's pants inconsistently sized?

For instance I've got 4 pairs of pants that are the same brand that all fit the exact same that range in size from 31-34....

It makes no sense.

Are they the same cut/style?

I've always assumed that men's clothes were more consistently sized than women's, but now that I think about it, my husband had a variety of sizes, sometimes even slightly different inseams.

I worked for a clothing store while in high school and I developed the invaluable skill of being able to guess a man's jeans size at a glance. Made for a fun party trick in college.

Yup. All four in question are Polo chinos.

I've got other brands that vary between 31-32, but that's not as wide of a gap.

I can wear a 31, 32, and 33 in Polo Andrew shorts. All pretty much feel the same.

Ralph Lauren sizing is all over the place on all of their clothes. I hardly buy them anymore.

I've been on the Brook Brothers Advantage Chinos for a while now, and their 36-33 have been the perfect fit for 5 or 6 years now. I haven't noticed in sizing discrepancies in that particular pant, but I did buy another style from BB recently in a 36-34 and they were way too small. Length was fine but they felt more like a 32 waist because I couldn't even get them buttoned.

I've gone to bonobos shorts.

All my polo has become knock around stuff ever since I saw those stupid bear shirts.

I have a horrible time finding khaki pants...size 32x30/29s is like looking for a fricking unicorn.

The obesity epidemic has had an affect on men's clothing cuts. I wear a size 32 waist and it is hit or miss when I go shopping for a new pair of pants or shorts.

I bought a pair of cargo pants at Costco and took them home without trying them on. Though the label said 32, they were actually closer to a 35 or 36. The pants would literally slide off me when I zipped and buttoned them up.

Doing some resultant research, I learned that many clothing manufacturers "fudge" on sizing to make their clothes more appealing to the buyer. This sneaky tactic is more prevalent in women's clothing but it definitely is a part of marketing to men as well.

I had the same issue recently. I had to sell 2 pairs on Ebay. You have try on your pants even if they're your usual size I've learned.

i struggle with this as well.

i also have a complaint that there are so few pants out there for 29-32 waisted guys. sometimes i want to put on weight, just so my clothes options can expand a little.
