. . .while standing in front of the soon to be built $225,000,000 athletic center. He doesn't want to risk his salary if the union got voted in.

Fox is predicting the players are now scared and no chance the union wins on April 25.

Student athletes everywhere are saved!

they don't need a union but the system as it exists must change and will once the lawsuits are decided.

Like I say, student athletes should have one of two options:

1) Take a 4-year scholarship that the university must honor so long as you meet minimum academic requirements.

or

2) Forego the scholarship, negotiate a year-by-year salary, contingent on on-field success. At the end of the contractual period, the university retains the right to cut ties with the student athlete.

They should negotiate like anyone else with their job. If they want to take an offered scholarship, fine, but there shouldn't be an stupid stipulations. College football is a professional sport. They should be treated like professionals. Any other proposal presupposes some stupid idea about amateurism or treats the players like someone else's property that doesn't have the same rights afforded a normal person.

If that's what you want, fine, but there isn't any way to argue against the players being paid what they're worth on the open market. People just don't want capitalism infringing on their little games. If middle/upper class white kids were the main people making up these rosters this would have changed a long time ago.

Don't think this will stop at Northwestern. Too much money, too many lawyers, and too stupid politicians for this to die.

This makes sense on the surface but is fraught with problems. If there isn't a set salary then small programs won't be able to compete for recruits. Texas and USC can just outbid every program. Then you might have to do a salary cap problem. And you have to worry about Freshmen in college who may or may not pan out making way more money than they are worth. You can't usually know what an 18 year olds potential for earnings are.

In the current system, the athletes get rewarded. They all happily choose to accept the arrangement. In effect, IF THEY ARE GOOD ENOUGH FOR THE NFL, it is an internship. There is nothing wrong with internships.
