This surprises me.

upswing in Tennessee?

This not so much. They are like the state of Alabama was 10-15 years ago. They are just now getting and keeping the best coaches in state.

TN will never match AL in terms of football talent, but it is certainly getting better and better... Especially greater Nashville (Williamson Co, the Davidson private schools, Murfreesboro, etc). Nashville metro schools not so much due to shitty structuring.

The city of Nashville will never reach it's full potential like Birmingham, when it comes to HS talent.

At this current rate TN will surpass AL in about 5 years statistically speaking.

Tennessee will have a hard time consistently putting out as much football talent as Alabama.

Why is that? Does Alabama have a higher population or a higher percentage of african americans?

Im sure some years will be better than others but the results of the metro Nashville area are starting to show.

Alabama (08 - 12) - 42

2012 - 9
2011 - 7
2010 - 7
2009 - 7
2008 - 12

Tennessee (08 - 12) - 15

2012 - 6
2011 - 2
2010 - 3
2009 - 2
2008 - 2

Alabama (13 - 15) - 31

2015 - 10
2014 - 10
2013 - 11

Tennessee (13 - 15) - 23

2015 - 8
2014 - 7
2013 - 8

Talent is on the rise in both states for sure but it's growing at a much quicker rate in TN.

More emphasis on football year-round? However, Tennessee has the population advantage by a sizeable margin. The percentage of African-Americans would be in Alabama's favor. But considering the population difference, that can't solely be the reason.

Tennessee 6.4 million
Alabama 4.8 million
