Sadly, there has been quite an Ohio and Pennsylvania influx in recent years. College of Charleston attracts some Northern students whose parents fall in love with town. I mean, who wouldn't? Also, the surronding areas of Charleston (Johns Island, Kiawah, Seabrook) have a noticeable Yankee crowd.

We need a definition of "southern" before we make a list.

Well yeah, there's always Yankees coming to our schools. No surprise because our state is beautiful.

Eta: I don't think Yankee students or tourists should affect the "Southerness" of a state.

. I love Charleston..way better than Savannah IMO

They are both very similar, but still different. I feel like no one can deny with a straight face that Charleston has more to offer than Savannah. That being said, Savannah is a little dirtier and grittier. Savannah is definitely more "artsy" than Charleston. I also love their great parks and public squares.

To make it an illustration, you can lump Charleston, Savannah and New Orleans as the Big 3 "similar" tourist towns of the South. Similar foods, architecture, etc.

To the far left would be New Orleans.
To the far right would be Charleston.
Savannah would be appropriately put in the middle.

New Orleans is definitely the dirtiest, most artistic, "anything goes" between the three. Charleston is substantially cleaner, friendlier, reserved and more well-kept and maintained. Savannah is a little something in between the two.

I don't either. But you cannot deny that there have been some snowbirds here and there. I met a girl recently (from Philadelphia) whose parents just purchased a home in the South of Broad area (must be loaded). They are few and far in between, but they can be found.

ETA: If Charleston isn't defined as "Southern", then I don't know what is. I'd argue that Charleston is, hands down, the most quintessential "Southern" city.

From my experience living in Florida for 15 years south Florida is New York south. On the west coast of Florida where I live is where all the Midwesterners from Iowa Michigan Ohio etc came down and are taking over. Florida is not southern it definitely should rank last

Mississippi definitely #1
Alabama close #2
Georgia/South Carolina #3 tie
Northern Louisiana #4
Tennessee #5
Arkansas #6
Eastern Texas #7
Kentucky #8
Florida panhandle #9 slowly changing from southern
Southeastern Louisiana #10 Primarily because of N.O.

Draw a horizontal line just South of Ocala and that is whre Florida become less Southern; But all of that North and North West area beat both Texas and Mizz. as for being more Southern.

You are right on a out drawing the line below Ocala. Jacksonville, the panhandle, and north central Florida are still southern

I don't deny that.

I would, too. We've got it all.

I don't understand how ANYONE is ranking Mississippi first, though. Everyone laughs at that state. It's terrible. The fattest and dumbest state in the nation is not #1

Maybe not of a whole state, but consider all of the students at Kentucky that come down to UK so they can go to school in the south. You pick them out pretty quickly... Mostly because of their Ohio State Hoodies. It certainly mutes or causes a shift in student population.

The white tennis shoes help pick them out, too. Maybe that's gone out of fashion but in the early to mid 2000s everyone of them wore white tennis shoes (think k-swiss or adidas cap toes).

Those things may be statistically true, but it's not because of rednecks, I can assure you. At any rate, MS is more southern than SC, and I would know, I've lived In MS and NC, and spent a good bit of time in SC.

Mississippi is in it's own stratosphere. Alabama is closer to California than it is Mississippi.
