The two-time former junior college All-American will transfer from the Alabama basketball program, coach Anthony Grant announced Wednesday.

Key started seven games and averaged 3.7 points and 15.4 minutes a game. It came down to a matter of opportunity, Grant said.

"With Algie, (he) wanted more of an opportunity to play more consistent minutes and play a bigger role," Grant said. "With these guys, you get one opportunity to be a student athlete and enjoy having a success on the court. So I can fully understand wanting a bigger opportunity and we certainly wish him the best of luck."

Key averaged 17.6 points a game at Barton Community College last year and 18.7 as a freshman.

I wish him luck

Although I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that he's yet another prospect signed by CAG who failed to live up to his ranking (with Key it was more his JUCO credentials than his ranking).

I remember thinking that game if he was he even on Oklahoma's scouting report. Every time he pump-faked a 3, the defender bit. You would have thought he was Ray Allen.

His JUCO credentials don't say much. He was one of 30+ players in his division to receive that all-american honor and he was on the third team both times (of 3 teams). What says a lot is his offer list which was rather lack-luster. I thought it was a bad offer from us from the get-go.

Yeah he never seemed to figure out his role, or was never taught his role. Seemed lost out there a lot of times.

Good luck to him though.

Guess we aren't going to sign his football talented nephew now

Oh well. Key wasn't even a decent sec player honestly.

It's not a proper Anthony Grant offseason until we're hemorrhaging scholarship players.

I know this guy isn't a major contributor but who else leaves the team? Somebody will. Last year I felt we lost our only legit NBA prospect (IMO) in Lacey.

the big swede is not returning for a 5th year, so we're down 2 schollys now, i believe ... that's assuming no more leave, which is not a safe bet at this point ...

I was being sarcastic a bit.

did hear from a friend who goes to some of these "insider" meetings. Claims they were told that the offense will be completely changed and that there should be more up tempo with this incoming group in..In year 5 we should have seen more up tempo since these are all his recruits.

I felt like the Swede would leave but we need the depth off the bench that Key provided and should have been a decent roll player in year 2 off the bench. Cant afford to lose anyone else. You listening AG?

We have numerous guards. Key is and would continue to be the worst shooter of the bunch which is why he'd play very little. His scholarship is better served hopefully going to a post player, which is what the staff wants to do.
