To no one's surprise, the pursuit of Martin from Marquette's side is absolutely real at this point, and from what I can gather most feel like he is going to listen attentively, if he's not doing so already.

Have heard speculation from some people on the Tennessee side of things this morning that they feel it's a very real possibility that he leaves for the Marquette job. Very real. If that happens, I would guess that we'll know about it in 24-48 hours.

Let me stress that I haven't heard that anything is done at this point in time, not at all, but everything points to the chance of Zo leaving for Marquette as being very real at the moment.

Buyout on Zo's end drops from $2.6M to $1.3M on Tuesday.

Cuonzo has not been approached about a possible extension or raise "at this time" according to a UT spokesperson.

Trade Martin to Marquette for cash then use cash to rehire Pearl

Problem solved!

His own fault imo. Did a terrible job this season which led to the fan base's disapproval.

Wasn't just Johnny Redneck either. Boosters are fed up as well.

From what we've gathered recently from a couple of off-campus sources, Martin and his staff have been battling some resource issues behind the scenes as well. Apparently, in February, multiple donors indicated to the athletic department that they no longer wished to allow their private planes to be used for basketball recruiting purposes.

Personally if I was Zo, I'd leave. If Stokes leaves and UT barely make the bubble next season, people will call for his head all season long. Why stay loyal to a program when you know your seat will be scorching hot?

I agree. Would be best for all sides (except maybe Marquette) for him to take this job.

If you can make the Sweet 16 and still have a pissed off fanbase, you should leave.

FWIW I want him to stay and I was impressed by his Sweet 16 run. But before barely making the play-in game 3 weeks ago, UT was on the verge of 3 straight NIT appearances.

Criticism from the fanbase was very well warranted up to that point. With the talent UT has, you're not suppose to be on the bubble for 3 straight years just to barely make the Top 68. That's the definition of mediocrity. What are fans suppose to do? Demand mediocrity instead of excellence?

No coach leaves because of fans throwing pressure on them. If they do they're not cut out for D1 - an obsessed fan base is normal for basketball programs. I know it's weird for most SEC schools because football is the only sport at most places but for those SEC schools with a basketball fan base, it's as insane as SEC football fandom and the same is true at schools like Marquette or any of the basketball conferences.

the guy doesn't seem to have the support of the admins and fan base. I'd be looking elsewhere myself.

The plane thing happened back when Joan Croanan was interim AD after Hamilton was fired and boosters were mad because Hammy had run things into the ground and we didn't have a damn penny to our name (their money got wasted by Hammy's incompetence). I don't know why people think it has anything to do with Martin.

Joan Cronan was not the interim AD in February.

Actually, most fans want Martin to stay.

No but the plane stuff happened looooooong ago. It's being presented as new but that's incorrect.

No. It's Cuonzo's fault for being a very mediocre coach.

He's buying 3 more years of top earnings at a good basketball coach. He's only got one year in the hopper at UT. He's going for stability.

Hopefully he's funding his retirement accounts, because I don't think he'll be a head coach again (at a top-tier school) after his stint at Marquette.

Martin hasn't done anything special, but if he leaves, UT will hire a bar coach. Probably Amaker or someone else who will just be a disappointment.

I see both sides of it. I understand the fan criticism up until the tournament run. He had a very talented roster all year but never truly maximized it. I don't think it was out of reach for Tennessee fans to expect this team to be one of the top teams in the SEC this season. But I also see that he dealt with injury issues last season (hence their run late in the season) and that it's tough to follow someone like Pearl. I can also understand feeling slighted by the lack of a contract extension.

But if he goes somewhere like Marquette, if he's bothered by fan expectations he's going to be unhappy there as well. Especially since they're always looking for their next Al McGuire.
