Pell Grants are like $5k a year max. $450/month max is not a lot for someone who doesn't have time to work a job.

$8 x 40 is $320 a week, before taxes.
I would have gladly taken $450 a month in addition to my stipend, room, board, supplies, books, and tuition being paid...

When your shelter, food, tuition, books, healthcare, and transportation are all paid for, and you still get $100 a week walking-around-money, you have a pretty good gig going for yourself.

They also get stipends from the school each month.
All together, plenty are able to afford to lease a car or live off campus in an apartment/house and afford to pay for it with their only obligations being athletics and classes.
Pretty sweet gig, really.
Yes, the football players scholarships in part play for the volleyball, women's basketball, softball, tennis, etc. scholarships, but I haven't heard a logical explanation how this paying players idea will coincide with the title IX obligations...

Yep.
Hell, I was taking out loans, working summer and part time jobs and paid internships to get through college.
While I didn't have to practice, I would gladly have traded my jobs and 30k in debt by the time I graduated for an athlete's gig in college.

My meal plan at bama gave me almost $200 every 2 weeks. I believe it only covered 15 meals per week thus the stipend.

If it's like UGA, there are different meal plan packages, if you are a football player, you get the 24/7/365 package. If the dining hall is open, you get food.

that's plenty of spending money. I think most of us got by on much less in college.

BS. Full ride scholarship athletes get one meal a day. One meal. Not all of these kids families can afford to give them pocket money, money for clothes, money for other essentials. Those kids deserve some money in their pockets.

If their parents can't afford to give them money then they qualify for grants that will feed them.

Yeah, all of those kids likely qualify for and get Pell grants that equate to cash for their pockets since everything else is payed for school wise.
They also have the option to take out student loans on top of that for more cash if they choose.
