Northwestern Players Granted Unionization

It's Chicago so pretty typical of that corrupt liberal bastion.

But it sets a precedent that hasn't been needed for over a century. And the talking heads are going to go crazy with this.

The school presidents, athletic directors and cads like ESPN can only blame themselves if this gets out of hand. College football was fine until ESPN came into being and the presidents and athletic directors realized how much more money there was to be had.....but not without a price.

Nothing good will come of this, for the players, the schools, or the fans.

Right now, this is only a regional decision that has to be approved by the Federal NLRB in D.C. If it stands, the appeal will likely go all the way to the supreme court. The decision could only apply to private schools, but would have a ripple effect throughout college sports.

The Northwestern President has already said that the university would likely drop football if the players formed a union.

This would also be the first union that only has a set time you can be in it.

What about dues? Who pays that?

When you graduate do you continue to get letters from your union for support? The union will make money off this and that is their priority.

They've taken a hit the last few years. Gotta dig up some more revenue.

That is exactly what every school should do. If schools players vote to unionize then tell the players to pack their shite and go home. Also even if players have some schools that allow it, it isn't going to be how the players think it is going to be, with one year scholarships being the norm lots of players are going to be told hey you didn't cut it last year your scholly is not being renewed.

Maybe start having teams with a lot more walk-ons.

So far we all see pretty much eye to eye. Wonder when someone is going to drop the bomb on this thread.

Also, what about firing these "employees" for poor performance? What about firing these "employees" for any number of things that students might be able to get away with but "employees" cant.

Bomb, did someone say bomb? The O'Bannon case is the potential bomb. The NLRB and/or the Wage Hour Board may or may not back the players' play. O''Bannon is headed to a jury last I read. If O'Bannon wins then college ball will radically change.

I read they qualify to unionize as employees due to being on a scholarship. Will Northwestern pull the whole team's schollys?

And if O'Bannon doesn't do it, the class action suit filed by Kessler on behalf of five current athletes will. NCAA has been a dead man walking. The only question is who will land the fatal blow and how it is going to completely frick things up (for better or for worse, probably worse given how much money is at stake and how inept the leadership has proven to be in college athletics these last 50 years).

Athletic Depts will no longer be tax exempt organizations. They will have to Incorporate, elect CEO's, CFO's, pay taxes, issue W-2's or 1099's etc... They'll be subject to labor laws etc...

Will be the end of CFB as we know it & I can see most Universities leaving the NCAA & Big time CFB on their own...

Instead of donating to the Hartman Fund for S/A's you'll be paying PSL's for your seat..etc...

This is a rabbit hole I don't wanna go down...

That's the idea. Northwestern couldn't give one iota of a frick less about athletics as compared to its academics. Anything that jeopardizes that academic mission is dead weight to them.

On the bright side, we'll get to see is schools like Vandy, Duke, Stanford, etc. really buy into all the hoopla they spew about academics being king. That should at least be entertaining for a few months.

But it's a journey we've been staving off for the better part of 50 years. This has been inevitable. I'm just pissed that UGA hasn't managed to win a natty in my lifetime and may not get the chance after the dust settles

I love it... Let's go back to holding tryouts for kids who got into the school... You know, the University of... Let the NFL have their minor league on their own dime.
