The SEC leads the nation in recruiting year in and year out. There is A LOT of talent in the southeast in general, hundreds of 4 or 5 Star players reside in the southern states. A brief look at those recruits threads on this board alone will show a vast difference in the number of posts and level of excitement when a 4 or especially 5 star recruit commits to a school or is deciding b/w SEC schools.

However, we all know that some 3 star recruits go on to perform like 5 star recruits in college and one might even think that the recruit was much more deserving of national attention earlier in the process, before college.

So who was the 3 star recruit that you can remember being the most excited about before they went on to have a great collegiate and possible pro career? Who was the 2 or 3 Star diamond in the rough that you were telling everyone was going to pay off huge before they put on your school's uniform?

IMO, for SC it was Pharoh Cooper. A 3 Star dual threat QB/CB out of Havelock HS in NC. I watched him play a few games his Sr year and he was the best athlete on the field both games. Then I watched him smoke Concord HS in the State Championship and be the game MVP. Next was the SC/NC Shrine Bowl and he was again the best player on the field that day, winning the Offense MVP award. The national sites then started paying him more attention, but he was still a 3 Star guy. I had a bunch of posts on this site alone saying this guy was going to be special.

Finally Pharoh came to SC, played as a true FR and was utilized as a PR/KR/WR/QB (in the wildcat.) He was awarded with FR All SEC and FR All American honors by coaches and media.

Eddie Jackson would have been a high 4 star/5 star if it wasnt for grades, so Ill say him.

Think about that for a second. Gurley was a friggin 3* for a lot of the recruitment. Big reason I am 50/50 on rankings meaning crap.

This is made even more ridiculous since he was rated as an ATH because a lot of analysts thought he would end up at safety. They thought he was too thin to play RB

Mark Ingram was a 3 star on a couple of sites, but I dont think many people was excited about him at the time. I remember scout had him as the 58th ranked running back.

He was a 3 star for most of the recruiting cycle. I thought he remained a 3 star on Rivals.

Honestly, Johnny Manziel. You look at his HS highlights, and you see the same magic he's displayed in college.

3500 yards passing, 44 TDs, 5 INTs
1695 yards rushing, 30 TDs
22 yards receiving, 1 rec, 1 TD
89 yards on one KO return, 1 TD

76 total TDs...all during his Senior year.

Recently, Sammie Coates. He had all of the measurables coming out of high school. I was amazed that he went so under the radar before Auburn saw him at a camp and flipped him from Southern Mississippi. Now, he is one of, if not the, top receivers in the SEC.
