What would have happened if Mettenberger had stayed on the UGA team?

It seems that he would never have gotten out of the shadow of Murray even if he hadn't gotten in trouble. Would he have had any shot at all of taking snaps other than as a backup? Would he have possibly tried to transfer knowing that he would not be seeing playing time?

Obviously getting in trouble is never the best course of action but in the end it did have the silver lining of allowing him the opportunity to achieve what may not have been possible at UGA.

On a side note, who would have been LSU's QB if Mett had not come along?

He would have transferred after Murray's first year. The camp competition that year was very close but had Mett not been booted I think Murray's superior work ethic would have won the coaches over given that they were pretty equal ability wise.

Obviously it is just speculation but if i remember correctly Murray was well ahead of Mett in the coaches eyes, I doubt he would have ever overtaken him. His desire to rape probably worked out in his best interest this time.

So Mett got in trouble the summer of freshman year before the season started? Wikipedia doesnt really clarify. Just curious if Richt had any choice in the matter of naming Murray to start.

I was gonna say that. I thought he ran off once Mettenberger committed

Good thing. Sounds like Teddy lacked the chest necessary to compete

if I remember correctly, it was after the spring game but before the season started because I know he played very well in that spring game

Worked out well for him obviously. If I remember correctly, he also had a high school teammate that he really wanted to have an LSU offer as well and we weren't committing to that, but weren't completely ruling it out either. We were still evaluating his teammate. We seemed to covet Mett more though.

Makes me wonder how Teddy would have done.

Would the better defenses of the SEC have made him not as effective vs. better receivers and Oline have made him even better?

I'm almost certain he would not be the Teddy we know today. Tougher SEC defenses, and his first two years without Cameron wouldn't have helped anything.

Maybe if this guy was still around and you converted him to QB.

Yeah, it's not really fair to ask how another QB would have done at LSU, with us having no QB coach and Stud as coordinator.
